not realy arnold ...once the carbs are working good it will not smoke much at all if any .....try it you will probably feel the difference right away.....atf makes the gas of today more like the gas these wings were design to burn ...with carb cleaning nature

I reinstalled the carbs on my 81 Interstate yesterday using new o-rings on the intake manifold as the old ones were flattened. I used several tricks suggested in this website, like running the throttle cables around outside the frame--they were very easy to hook up. I also removed that piece of sheet metal behind the fan since I'm not using the fairing lowers; I cut it down the middle with tin snips to get it out. Now the motor can be seen.
All that remains is to remount the faux tank and seat. :cool!:

you have a good grip arnold ....cutting that heat sheild like that ...ido that to my wings to ...the cable thing is a must for user friendly method....seems you are well on your way to righting everything on your bike .....good job

Cleaning the carburetors manually did the trick! My bike idles just fine now. I filled it up with premium gas (no ethanol) and added four ounces ATF to the gas, took a long ride, and it is like a new bike. Thanks to everyone who offered advice and encouragement. :thanks:
