The explorer whose path they were following was stuck in ice for 2 years.... global warming.... climate change.... I am glad it gets warm if it did not life would suck.... and it is nice to see four seasons so I am glad it changes..and I feel sorry they are stuck... sends there are 2 shops now in same condition...

Yeah...damn cold here too!! Single digits this AM, wind chill below zero.....us (real)Texans ain't cut out for this kinda stuff!! At least it ain't snowin, or icin.....
Hard to believe folks in the Arctic are surprised to be stuck in ice....dint they kinda know that goin in? "Hey fellers....we MIGHT run into some ice during this expedition...." :headscratch:

I strive to maximize my carbon footprint everyday. :deadhorse:

~O~
:good: Me too. Carbon CO2 is great for plant growth!

We are living it through our last government ( Carbon Tax), hopefully the current Liberal government will fix the mess created by Labour. A bottle of 134a AC gas costs me $900 AUD for 11kgs ($100 AUD deposit on the bottle), when I was in the States in August I saw this ad for 13.6kgs (30lb) fo $89.99 USD. Something is seriously wrong with our legislation where not only is the gas overpriced but I have to pay about $300 AUD in licensing fees to be able to buy and use the gas.....

134, 134 a, and 22a are supposed to be the envirofriendly gasses. We have pretty much the same issues here over R22. Think how difficult it would be to service an old ammonia system.
Oh btw. We are getting :0fftopic: here. :hihihi:

This is a pretty off topic thread in way off topic forum so who cares.
I say let it roll an see where it goes!

Did those expedition dudes get unstuck btw?
No.....the ship is stuck, but they took the passengers and scientists off by helicopter. The crew can wait it out until the ice loosens. They have supplies onboard for 3 months.

Here is a pic of the ship:

I guess their cause wasn't great enough for them to wait out the cold... :head bang:

So what would be the procedure here for the crew to go home?
Get up, hit the gas, if it don't go then go back to bed and try tomorrow?

I bet they wish that was how it worked! :hihihi:

No, they work a watch standing system where there are 3 watches a day for the crew. They will monitor the weather, watch the barometer, wind speed, direction, water and air temp changes to determine dew point and when the ice will be able to be either cracked or split. Sometimes, a shift in wind alone over a 24 hour period is enough to move massive amounts of ice a few inches, enough to release pressure on the hull and allow the ship to break through inch by inch. Ice breaking is a very slow process and it takes a tremendous amount of skill and knowledge to NOT GET STUCK!

Some of these ships are between 20,000 and 30,000 horsepower. That ship has a hull strengthened for ice breaking so they will be OK for a while.

Here is an example:
