Hi all. I got my wing running! Not very well but it runs. It back fires at the exhaust and through the carbs. It also is dumping gas into the plenum. I am not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! :beg:

Sounds like the float levels are either too high, the floats are stuck, or there is crap under the needle/seats. You might try turning the fuel petcock off, and running it until it runs all of the fuel out of the carbs, and it dies. This allows the floats to drop all the way, and sometimes will clear a piece of doo-doo out of the needle/seats. You can also try tapping on the carb bowls with the handle end of a screwdriver while running....sometimes this will un-stick a stuck float.
Might just be time to do a carb overhaul.... :Awe:

I'd bet it will start running better once the gas is turned off at the petcock as it starts running by not being flooded with raw gas.
Usually have a good 5 minutes idling before it runs out of gas.

Yep! What they said. If it has sat a while you may need to open the carbs and clean them up. We have some very good threads on how.

Thank you for the ideas. I actually had the carbs off and taken apart and cleaned them. Boiled the whole rack until it was spanky clean. I was very anal about drying them out and making sure everything was clean. I set the floats but not sure if I got them right and I did not replace all the o rings on the seats and so on on the bottom of the carbs. I am thinking I may have to buy the randakk kit and do it right. I think the sync may be off too. Should I mess with the four screws that set the sync?

Not without vacuum gauges unless you want to do a manual set with the carbies off the bike. With my CBR I have had plenty of times when I shut off the fuel on the tap to stop the bike from flooding, like Dan said it will run for quite some time on what is in the fuel bowls. When my carbies are bad I would often idle at about 4000 rpm to keep them from fuelling up whilst I was waiting at traffic lights. Even when I was cruising at 5000 rpm for awhile it would start to over fuel so I would just grab full throttle and give it a work out to get rid of the extra fuel. You could do all this whilst running the sea foam through some tanks of fuel and maybe they will get better.

If you set the floats with carbs upside down. They are set wrong. Carb rack should be on edge with just enough angle for the floats to seat the needles.

Thanks again all. I believe I discovered part of the problem. Unbeknownst to me the float valve has a spring loaded post that makes contact with the tang on the float. All of those post things were stuck in the down position. I got them to spring again and reset the floats. Is that how the float valves are suppose to act? I sure hope so.

yes all the little posts are spring loaded and should be free. They are the reason for adjusting floats with carbs on end. Upside down the little posts compress from the weight of the float.

And make sure those tips are absolutely clean. The tiniest amount of crud will keep them from sealing even with the floats set correctly.

Thank you gentlemen! It is starting to make sense now. Believe me those seats and valves are pristine! I would like to leave the carbs on the bike for a little while anyway. :thanks:

Ok so I have taken the carbs off for the sixth time now and did a total overhaul with randakks kit. Put the carbs on afterwards and the bike started right up! It ran pretty well then started loading up with gas again. Took the carbs off to check the floats again. I know some of the floats were stuck when I first worked on the bike. I think I may have bent them somewhat. If the floats are not right how do I set the level. I have tried to get them straight according to randakks video. Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions?

Run clear plastic tubes from the bowl drains up the sides of the carbs. You can do this on a bench as long as the carbs are level. Now fill the carbs with fuel. No smoking. Each tube should fill to just below the top edge of the bowls. If any are higher the float needs adjusted down (tang to pin bent up). If you use a small mower gas tank you can drain the fuel back into it with the tubes from the bowls before adjustment.

Did you test for faulty floats? Shake them and listen for fluid moving inside them. You can also place them in hot water and see bubbles come out of them if they are cracked.

I would hook up the test fuel tank on the bench then narrow it down to which float is causing the problem first.
You may have a leaking needle and seat even though the float height is set correctly.

Honda parts are good, doesn't mean they are perfect and never need replacing.
