View attachment IMG_0350 - iPhone (Cellular).3gpI am new to the wing life and have just picked up a 1981 Honda GL1100.

There is some engine noise that I am hoping to get a veteran to listen to and let me know their thoughts. It could be perfectly normal for wings.

I am used to a SOHC 78 CB750k - they are generally noisy engines due to the camchains.

Wings have belts instead of camchains - correct?

Here is the audio/video.

It does sound good. The cams do use belts on these, but the transmission mainshaft/clutch is driven by a large primary chain, which makes a bit of noise in high-mileage engines. The oil pumps and starter drive are also chain-driven. How many miles on your bike?

The bike has 29,000 on it.

I thought I heard something slapping but that could be the primary chain. I think it quiets when it is warm...

At 29k, the chain should still be nice and tight. Might it be 129,000 well-kept miles?

Either way, she sounds good. You might think about new timing belts, unless you know they've been recently changed. They will deteriorate with age, and if one lets go, you're looking at bent valves. They're cheap at Amazon.com and Gates T-274 is the number for the ones you want.

A bike that has 29 K would have to be ridden less than 1 k per year unless it has sat a long time and to be honest your bike sounds too good to have sat for years, my money is on 129 K and I'd be listening to Dan and McGovern. Sounds like a keeper to me ..!!

Here is a clip after the new timing belts and carb sync. What is that ticking?

That sounds like an exhaust leak at the manifold. There are copper crush washers that need to be replaced whenever the exhaust is dropped. Sometimes the bolts come loose a turn and can be tightened back up.

Do the older wings make any engine noise? I come from an 78 SOHC CB750 that make typical cam chain and clutch basket rattles.

I just posted this in another thread, but take a listen and judge for yourself:

Not yet. I told the mechanic to do it when the rest of the work was done, but it was not on the list he performed - I will have to ask. I just don't want it to be something in the engine that might cause and accident.

I checked the exhaust for leaks and also made sure the bolts were tight at the manifold. No difference.

If it were a lifter, will that damage engine?

it dosnt help.....if it is a lifter ... better put rocker our of adjustment you sould be able here it with a large screw driver ....putting driver end on valve cover and handle to ear ... see if you can loscate the noise .....I have one of those extra long long screwdriver I use ... so I can ck everywhere on the motor without getting inside the bike ....that's what id do now
