Hello from sunny Arizona. Just picked up this vintage 1975 GL1000 with a BN Jupiter sidecar. Bike has 46K orig miles, spent its whole life here in the dry desert. Been sitting around 7 years so going to change oil & filter, flush radiator and then see what the carbs need. The side car is in amazing condition, bike is pretty straight and unmolested too. Glad to see this forum is dedicated to keeping these sweet old machines on the road.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I do not have any experience with sidecars, anyone have any safety tips for me? Do they need to be re-aligned to the bike after sitting for extended periods of time?

I never heard of any needing realignment for that reason. We do have several members here with sidecars. I'm sure they will chime in soon with advice on alignment and riding.

Welcome!
Be careful with right-turns (sidecar will lift up if taken too fast or abrupt).
If possible, take S/TEP classes. https://evergreenmotorcycletraining.org/sidecar-training/
Sitting long period may not change the alignment but it's a good idea to check it anyway.

Yes.
Just like cars roll (suspension) and eventually roll over (the cars themselves).
Caused by centrifugal force acting on CoG which is above the ground.

Me flying the chair in S/TEP class.

You betchya!

First time I drove Suzies 1200 hack I turned too fast and felt the car come up!
In reality it probably didn't come up much but it sure made me cool it!

Weird too how being driven by one wheel on the side like they are how gassing it will make the whole rig pull to one side.
Totally controllable but something to watch for.

I would recommend a riding course also but if you don't, take it SLOW at first and get plenty of practice out somewhere with little traffic.
Oh, and always remember your not on a solo bike and to watch for obstacles on the car side.
It was odd having to ride on the left side of my lane to give the car room from parked cars.
I nailed the right tire twice on the curb while parking.

If you ask for an advice in sidecar forums, they will tell you in detail but basically:

1) the rig wants to go right when you accelerate
2) the rig wants to go left when you decelerate

all due to the asymetric inertia of the sidecar

They recommend lots of parking lot exercise including the feel of sidecar going up. As soon as it goes up, the rig becomes a motorcycle so you can ride around like that forever if you like. It's important to learn not to panic. Some novice sidecarists panicked, lost control, and went into the opposite lane for head-on collision... not good.

You can put some balast in the sidecar e.g. sand bags, lead weights, even a real "monkey" (sidecar passenger) to lessen the liftup effect. Or have really heavy sidecar (two seaters. etc.). That Jupitor sidecar looks a bit too light for Goldwing just like my Velorex is. After all, it (Velorex) is designed for Jawa 350cc motorcycles in the 60s.

But isn't that a LEFT turn? :headscratch:

I was going straight in the photo.
Once the sidecar goes up, it is just like a motorcycle so you can steer (counter-steer) like a motorcycle.

But to make the sidecar go up, you need a sharp RIGHT turn (if sidecar is attached on your right, which is not the case in countries like UK and Australia).
That applies centrifugal force to the left (outward of the turn) which makes the sidecar go up.
Until the sidecar goes up, it behaves like a car not like a motorcycle (which leans in the direction of the turn to counter-act centrifugal force with gravity).
