High rpm knock

well I just got my 83 1100 interstate last oct. so I've been trying to get it running better. put some sea foam in it to help her out. ran the valves changed the oil, new plugs now I have a knock at high rpm. don't know what it is. when I go though the gears it knocks at the top of gear change . or doing 65 mph it will do it but when I gas her up it stops till I get to a ? speed then it comes back. now when I down shift it don't do it or just setting there running it don't. just don't know what it is .its not getting hot.. she runs great.any ideas :head bang:

Does it make the noise under hard acceleration or while simply cruising? You see I'm now convinced the bike I just sold had a very slowly failing head gasket. Over the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year I owned her I developed a knock that got progressively worse over the years. I wouldn't really hear it in the cooler winter months but it was there every spring as it got hotter here in the desert, getting worse every summer. The reason I bring this up is I figure the drop in compression caused the knock.

Does it hydrolock?

I certainly wouldn't rule out this possibility.

O was experiencing a loss in coolant.
The cooling system is pretty much sealed and when all the parts are doing as they should, coolant shouldn't need to be added unless it has boiled over and puked it out.

o-man...it is hard to start when its hot or when the outside temp is below 40 the starter don't engage at cold temps.and the noise is just cruising hard acceleration it goes away... gerry...it kinda sounds like that

it coul be small head gasket leak ...ive seen that out of a knocking motor ...one cylinder full of built up antifreeze

Is it possible that It is a really bad ping(detonation)?

well the combustion chamber was sur modified big time in space and consistence ...I was kinda amazed ...I don't know the outcome of it all

so is that a high $ rebuild to do. or is it cheaper to find a motor that runs good & put it in. I was told that it mite be the tranny doing that noise. so park the bike be for she blows. this really sucks that saves me a lot of $ in gas go to work I drive 45 min one way...any one have a good 1100i motor 4 sale or where can I look 2 get one..ebay maybe

Though I haven't heard your noise first hand, I think "park it before it blows" was bad advise.

These engines properly maintained will run for a long time even sounding like a diesel engine.

A used engine is a crap shoot.
You may end up with one in worse condition.

Simplest way to post a video is to make a YouTube account and upload it there.
You then copy the video link into the post then we can watch it.

I agree with Dan to keep riding it within its limits if you need it is transport. As long as you have good tires and brakes ( suspension is nice too) I don't worry about the go so much. My mate the mechanic doesn't agree when I have to rev up the CBR at every intersection to clear the float bowls, but as long as I can ride it I don't stress. Sometimes it means winding the bike over for way too long with the starter motor to clear the fuel before it will fire up again.

That engine sounded like that the entire two years I rode it before swapping out to the '83 engine. With all of those bearings worn out, bad water pump, worn out springs and valves and most likely a bad spot on the crank and that engine still started and ran down the highway at 75 MPH without hesitation! (Not that I recommend 75 MPH with severe knocking).
