I need some help/advice.

Progressive Suspensions make replacement rear shock springs for GL1100. It is a bit pricey side and you need to disassemble rear shocks for installation (there is a tutorial on this site).

Alternatively, you can try cheapy Tiwanese shocks. They are fairly stiff (both springs and damping).
I tried them on my XS750 and too stiff for me (I only weigh 140 Lbs and don't do much two-ups.)
Other XS750 riders reported they were stiff enough for two-up riding.
GL1100 is heavier than XS750 so there is no guarrantee..

Or compatible shocks from Progressive Suspensions. Then it's a simple replacement.

Well I weigh 250 and will be two- upping frequently. What would I look up for the Taiwanese ones? Are they compatible with the 1100

You can search eBay or google motorcycle rear shocks. Just put eye to eye distance (I don't remember..) then a lot of shocks will show up. Brand-wise they are Emgo, Forsa, or something.

You may want to replace rubber seals.. I did that too just in case but old ones didn't look any bad..

One advice from me.
Don't forget to take out air with the console button before removing the hose. Otherwise you will be covered with oil just like me.. :head bang:

It slowly looses air. What are the progressive rear springs? I also thought about removing the rear air ride and going with a standard spring set up. Any suggestions?

Progressive 412 is the number you want to look for. Yes they are a bit expensive, and there is a cheaper alternative on ebay (Gerry has a set) but I had the 412's on my 81 when I bought it and haven't had anything bad to say about them.

I bought these coil springs shocks on Ebay for about $139 shipped. They are progressive in nature (two different windings) and to date are working like a champ! Direct replacement to the original air shocks:

Are the air shocks universal as far as the side they can go on. I see some advertised on eBay but some state which side they are off of. And others say universal?

Mine were marked left and right.
