I finally got a brake from work long enough this afternoon that I could take the 1200 and the Mass. title and my money to the tag/title place and get the bike registered, so now it is legal for me to ride. In order to transfer the title, I had to trailer the bike to the tag agent, so I hope today will be the LAST time that bike has to be on a trailer. When I got it home I got the plate put on and just couldn't let it sit in the garage, so what does a WingNut do but take it for a ride. Now a question....

I have this rust ring around the left tail pipe, and I am open to suggestions of how to get rid of it.

I know I could just cut it off and shorten the tail pipe, but not sure if that will affect anything. The PO suggested a chrome clamp, but that just sounds like a band-aid covering a scar, so I am looking for a long term fix. Any ideas?

Use that cloth header wrap on that section on both side? Anything is going to be a bandaid.

~O~

Yeah that was my thought also. I'm starting to think about some type of a slip on tail pipe... but I like the wrap idea.

Congrats on the legalization! I had a harley once and had a heat shield for the drop down part of the exhaust, the were real simple just used hose clamps to install, I think mine were strait and could have been strapped on anything/anywhere so maybe look at heat shields/guards ect on ebayYou dont need them there but they will cover it up.
Good luck.

Now I just have to change the stator so I can ride it without having to charge the battery for hours before I ride it. :smilie_happy:
Brian, are you sure that stator is shot? With such low mileage on the bike, it seems odd the stator would have fried on a Standard that soon (no tupperware like the dressed bikes).

Oh it is shot.

Following the instructions Dan posted in my other thread, it appears there was a recall on the 84 Wings for known bad stators. Reading it out, I should have continuity between the yellow wires, and there is one leg that has no reading at all. Plus, I am only getting about 21 volts. Now that it is street legal, I am going to ride it for a while an test it one more time to make sure.

There's a baffle in there so if you cut it off it's gonna be louder.

There goes that idea...

What I did was put turndowns on.
I didn't need to, just like the look.

I had to cut off the raised part at the very tip but left the baffles in.
Got the turndowns at a muffler shop.

While I had the engine out I sprayed rust buster on all the rusted part of the exhaust. Including tht ring you are talking about. It gets rid of the rust and does not look that bad. I am sure it will coime back but it gets rid of the cancer on the pipe.
I got rust buster at the farm store TSC.

We are thinking alike then...

Okay, so I see the rust ring is on the extreme tail end of the pipe and so has been said your baffle is in there. One possibility is to get buy or hire yourself a LARGE diameter pipe cutter. Take the silencer or muffler as you will call it off the bike and use the pipe cutter to just cut through the outer pipe, using a angle grinder grind back the edge about 1/8 inch and get a pro welder to weld it back together using Stainless Steel Mig or tig. the other way is to just remove the rust and wait for it to come back, or take them off replace with harley units.
