Lead Free Solder?

Ran across this little tid-bit of info today. Seems this might explain why so many automotive computers are taking dumps....and possibly any other electronic equipment...

Lead free solder, hate the stuff, it's a lot harder to get a decent joint than with the original kind. A real pain in the ass at work with a little contamination from road grime and mag chloride(road de-icer) added into the mix. I'm down to my last roll of the good stuff, trying not to waste it.

This big lead thing is highly sensationalized. Just like lead bullets, freon and many other things.

Back in the ole days when I used to do electronic bench repair, I had a "Fart Fan" to remove the rosin smoke from the workbench when using the good old 60/40 variety. Oddly enough, the health concern was from the rosin, not from the lead. You were taught not to hold the solder in your mouth in soldering class. I guess the lead concern is when it comes time to dispose of the old electronics. If you are repairing a joint (old work) that was soldered with the good stuff, be sure to use the good stuff to resolder. At work, when I have to use the lead-free @#$^*!, but when I'm doing my personal stuff, I always break out the good stuff. I have a stash of a couple of guages of 60/40 and 63/37 locked away for safe keeping and it will probably be willed to one of my kids once I no longer am able to raise a finger to solder. Hmmmmm maybe I should put a rider on my homeowner's insurance.......... :good:

One of the other things they took out of solder as the electronics industry developed was ACID that made it harder to get a clean solder joint :wave: :wave: :swoon: :head bang: Now you have to buy a bottle of acir to do the job in dirty enviroments
