Hey guys, I started looking for an air filter for my 76 and
the first thing I found was K&N at SIXTY ONE BUCKS!!!!
Are they effn' serious?
Then I found Emgo for about $15.
Also found one with a foam washable element for
about $30.

What do most of you run on your GL-1000s?
Any I should avoid?
Thanks guys.

I run a K&N look alike on my 1100.

It's been debated whether the freer flowing filters are better and give any improvement to running these bikes or are they just letting more dirt get sucked in.
Both opinions have valid points but I do feel an improvement running one in my Suburban and Van, not so much on the bike.

I just checked my van and after 10,000 miles or so the engine side is cleaner than it was with the paper filter. Haven't checked the Burb yet.

My mechanic recommends the paper elements as they are cheap and finer micron than the washable types. That said I love the washable types in really dusty conditions and when you have blowby that deposits an oily film on a paper element. The disadvantage is you need to service/wash regularly and most of us don't so we normally have restriction causing increased fuel consumption.

I have used both OEM paper and K&N. I found the K&N allowed more air flow, but it also increased my intake and engine noise a lot. I did not see a real big difference and ended up going back to the OEM paper.

hmmmmmm...did the 1200 like it william
not on cold days but once the motor warms up no problems
on the 1500 wing the idle can be as low as 800rpm or as high as 1100rpm. never had thos problems with either wing when i had stock air filters in them

Here is a hint from back when I was a kid learning from some real experienced guys that ran on dirt tracks: coat the inside of your filter housing (both before and after the element) with good stiff axle grease. The grease outside the element catches dirt that would clog the element, and the grease inside catches the fines that make it through. Not perfect, but cheap and easy!

I always smear clear grease/vaseline somewhere near the inlets of the carbs after the air filter, that way I can see if any dirt gets by the filter.
