I own a 1983 GL1100A. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to tie my .mp3 player into the Clarion II stereo on my bike? I am looking for a way to hard wire it into the system? I currently have an FM transmitter, but I am not pleased with the sound due to the high number of radio stations in my area. I would really like to tie the .mp3 player to the amplifier so I could listen without any noise from other stations.

Thank you in advance for your time!

I'm not familiar with that stereo but if it has a cassette palyer and you want a cheap solution you can try one of these:

I used one of those in my FPOS car until I upgraded the radio and was satisfied, but my 'Oldwing doesn't have a cassette player.

I tried a setup suggested on another site: I bought a ground loop isolator with 3.5 mm connectors. One end goes to an RCA adapter plugged into the Cassette inputs on the Clarion II control box. The other end I connected to my mp3 player. To listen to music I turn on the intercom, and barely turn on the FM radio, using the volume control on the mp3 player to control the volume.

This soution was not at all acceptable...I could barely hear the music, not to mention the music distortion at full volume and draining my mp3 battery within a couple of hours.

SO, I am waiting for a boostaroo that promises to boost the volume 4X. The boostaroo would go between the mp3 player and the ground loop isolator. This should significantly boot my line output from the mp3 player.

Anyone used this setup? Sounds easier than an FM modulator.

I'll report back when I get the Boostaroo in a few days.

surprised anyone remebers 4 tracks around here they think i'm makeing them up.

Well, those were some pretty blurry times. It was too hard to mount a reel to reel under the dash.

I tried a couple cheap FM transmitters and it was the worst thing I ever heard. So I borrowed my daughters iPOD transmitter and it works great. Just a difference in the quality. Personally I just find the MP3 player difficult to fumble with while going down the hiway. Easier for me to make cassette tapes a couple hours long. I think that's about as good as it's gonna get until I'm willing to ditch the original equipment.

When I installed my Sony radio, it came with a remote that I attached to the shelter with velcro. It also came with a cord to direct connect an iPod (not an auxilary jack, it has one of them too). So I can completely control the iPod with the remote and volume plus the remote controls the radio. But I'll be honest, I put the iPod on shuffle and go for about 14 hours without hearing the same song twice and get to hear every song on the unit!

Just got back from a trip to the Ozarks with my new mp3 player. Ended up buying a Cowon C2 player with a Boosteroo amp (the motorcycle version boosts the signal 4X), and they are plugged into the Cassette input on the Clarion II distribution box. Sounds absolutely great with the Cowon internal equalization (this is truly an audiophile quality mp3 player, plays many file formats, including lossless formats like flac, and I can simply drag and drop music files from my hard drive to the player). To listen to music, I put the radio and intercom volume levels at their lowest levels and adjust the volume with the mp3 player's volume control.

The only downside is not being able to adjust the volume easily while riding. But at least the music is muted automaticaly by the intercom/CB.

One advantage of using a FM transmitter istead of direct input is that I could then use the volume controls on the radio. Sounds like a winter project.

I know this is a bit of an old topic, but I found a way to just wire my cell phone/mp3 into the stock amp on my 82. I removed the head unit and use my phone for full control of volume and everything. I now have a blank plate where the radio was. I then mount my phone to the shelter with a mount and Velcro. This way I get my mp3 music, my GPS directions and even phone calls if I wanted through the bike speakers. I have pictures if anyone is interested.
