It's for balancing back pressure, you'll see it on cars too sometimes.
I think on our bike it also quiets and smooths exhaust noise to "blend" the pops together into a more even tone.
I'm not sure either is actually necessary.
There are guys running all types of pipes without the crossover, short, long, full baffle, no baffle, glasspack, and I've never heard of valves burning.
