They short out the stator when they fail. Look under the left side cover and look for a plug with 3 yellow wires to the left of the battery. The plug will be gone with each of the yellow wires soldered separately to it's mate. If it's still there you should make this modification regardless of the plug's condition. Well that search turned up quite a bit. How do I know if mine has been replaced already and how often does it need replacing? My bike has 80,000m. Could it have made it this far on the original plug?
