Near miss again..

My Oldwing did it again.. I mean.. engine trouble.

This morning, rode 25 miles or so on a freeway.
After that I did a bit of city riding (10 minutes?), then all of a sudden engine wouldn't rev and died.
If I crank it, it starts immediately but won't rev, won't idle and dies. Felt like out of gas.. but fuel pressure was okay. Electric pump clicked okay also.

Called AMA road side assistance which would arrive in 2 hours (yeah, nice). So I ate lunch at nearby restaurant, came back, started engine again and of course it ran just fine. So I took a chance and headed home. Half an hour of freeway riding later I am home.

So.. what the heck was that?
Heat related?

No reliability what so ever.. sigh

It feels like running out of fuel ? maybe sitting allows gas to trickle into carbs, would check fuel cap for venting and also fuel lines collapsing from a clogged vent or debris on the pickup screen inside the tank.
If electric something getting hot, coil resistor maybe or bad coils.

Start carrying a spark plug wrench and a screw driver. You could be fighting a plugged fuel filter, plugged fuel pickup, collapsing fuel line, or many other issues.

Possibly Heat-related also. When it happens again, check for spark at plugs. If you have spark in the hole and fuel in the cylinders, it will go.

+1 on the vent cap.

Mine did that and it was the fuel filter clogged up, new filter solved that.

+1 on starving for fuel. If you carry some flammable aerosol then you only need to spray some in the air box to confirm a no fuel issue quickly if it fires.

hmm single carb here guys ...its why i like clear line ...i can see what getting to carb ....gas tank vent pluged up might be right it well stop the gas big time especially on high up single carb

It doesn't seem to happen much these days but back in the 50's & 60's we'd be looking at possible vapor lock.

No matter how many carbs you have substituting a fuel source will confirm if fuel supply is a problem ( this also works with efi) :yes:

I have a clear fuel line and I saw fuel there. Also my fuel pressure gauge showed okay.

If it was clogged fuel screen/filter, why it came back after an hour of sitting?

I had a gas cap vent issue before so I drilled two holes in it.
I removed the gas cap there but it didn't change anything.

I carry tools so I thought about checking sparks but every time I crank, engine started. It just didn't rev up or idle, felt like fuel.
As some of you remember, I had a similar incident 500 miles away from home and that was due to bad ignition ground.
So I checked ground connections which were okay.

Right before it happened, I stopped at the side of the road for a few minutes while engine was idling. Air temp was around 80F and I had my electric plenum heater ON and plenum temp was around 120F I think. Did it cause gas in the float chamber percolate?

Maybe I should carry those cold spray cans from now on?

If cold spray works then you might consider turning off the heat.

Something a ran into once before was a hose between the pump and tank and collapsed under pump suction but as soon as the car shut off went back to round, Took a while of driving to collapse, drove me nuts, it was a cheap hose.. just for kicks I would replace the suction fuel line with a regulation fuel line, just to see.

What is regulation fuel line?

My local O'reilly auto parts used to sell black robust looking fuel lines by foot when it was Kragen.
Now only thing I can buy is fixed length clear fuel line in a package which I used on my Oldwing.

Yes, it is for gasoline.
O'Reilly auto parts have them.
