Neutral Light on in 5th gear

:roll: I'm buying a 82 Wing and the only issue is the neutral light is on in 5th gear and not on in neutral. I've been told that it was installed backwards. I am a newbie and would appreciate your wisdom.

It sounds like someone had the front cover off and screwed up the orientation of the neutral switch.
Not a big job to fix it just kind of messy. Requires pulling the radiator and draining the oil.

Checked out the electrical print and sure looks like the switch is in backwards. I'm not sure if that is physically possible or not as I am not familiar with it.

Does your bike have an overdrive indicator light? Could that wire be hooked to the neutral light by mistake?

IIRC, if the switch is 180 out the neutral comes on in 5th.

The neutral switch is unique to '82 and '83 models. The position of the switch is critical.

Notice the position of the pin in the switch in relation to the bolts. Also, the short end of the pin points to the 2 o'clock position. This is important for ease of reassembly of the transmission cover and also to ensure the switch is in the correct position for proper operation.

Maybe you should leave it like that as a theft deterrent? It gets real hard to push in 5th gear. :smilie_happy: :Egyptian:

It is actually on in 4th gear so running down the highway is not an issue. It actually lets me know that there is one more gear to go!!
