I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to the group. Today I got the titles to my latest buy a 1981 GL1100 trike (a triwing I think) that was a light roll over and a 1986 GL1200 aspencade . Was a package deal. I have gotten the 1100 to run, but won't idle. Has sat for a long time. Which brings up the next issue. Do I go with the single carb mod or not. The trike is for my son and will be going to Seattle when finished so it has to run great with no constant fiddling. Or do I try to rebuild the stockers to keep it stock so a Honda shop could work on it? I have been doing a lot of reading but have a lot more to do b/4 spring. If the 1200 runs ok I have been thinking about possibly a sidecar for it. I hope to make many new friends here. John

Welcome from Southern California! 2 nice bikes there! If your stock carbs are in decent shape, and rebuilt with care and quality parts, they are wonderful! Plenty of nearly 40 year-old bikes on here that are running strong on stock carbs.

The single carb setup should be the way to go for simplicity, although it still seems to be in the experimental stages. Plenum heating to combat icing, runner length and diameter, jetting...they're all slowly being figured out.

I'm running a set of 1000 carbs on my rebuilt '83 1100. They were nasty when I got 'em, but after a good cleaning, they run awesome! No new parts were needed.

Good luck with your projects, and we'd love to see 'em!

81 has pressed in jets so is a bit more trouble to clean up nice. If you're game for the single carb on yours I'd modify and clean the 1200 carbs and install them on the 81 and put the single on the 1200. Both racks may work just fine with careful cleaning as long as the fuel tanks have no rust and you keep 4-6 oz of atf in a tank of fuel. The atf helps to keep everything clean and moving free.
Welcome to our world of fun.

Welcome to CGW!

There are plenty of advocates out there for both single carb and stock carb set ups. Personally I like the stock set up. If you are a tinkerer and want to do some fun experimentation you can try a single carb set up. I is also easy enough to go from one to the other so nothing is permanent.

My humble opinion, clean up and run the stock carbs until you figure out which direction you want to go. Lets have some fun conversation about this in the Technical section of the forum...

+1

So Slabghost it is possible to use the 1200 carbs on the 1100. Is it a big deal to do it? Are they better carbs? Would I be better off finding a rack of 1200 to rebuild to install on the 1100? I need it to be a good running bike as my son wouldn't be able to work on it. I don't want to give him a trike that is a pain in the butt.

I'm pretty sure Joe had them on his 1100 Angry build. They might still be on it. Not sure at the moment what needs to be done to get them fitted. The set I have on my 1200 standard have been trouble free for almost two years now but I keep atf in the fuel always.

ok ... easy mistake ... i have done 1100 carbs on a 1200 ...but not 1200 on 1100 ... and dont think that would be a thing to do ... the intake horns are smaller on 1200 racks as the carbs are too ...when i had 1100 carbs on 1200 the 1100 heads were used also .... ive also 1000 carbs on 1100 angry build as they are bigger and it ran better...

V brings up good point ...with all the rubber in the 1200 carbs ATF mixed in the gas always could never be more important the rubber slides are like gold ... my buddy JPwinger knows where to get them way cheaper than the rip off prices ive seen elsewhere ....but with atf mix in the gas they may never good bad... V is also right on the 1200 carbs in general seem to work way more consistent than earlier years ....but they bring the smallest gas charge to the oldwings...and they go on the biggest oldwing 4 ....

in your quest with trikes ...if you are really carb savy id go single carb as it brings so much power to the table to combat the extra weight and all of a trike ... with what ive have first hand knowledge of ...i wouldnt use stock carbs as they lack power and operate poorly at low rpm and have way less torque at lower rpm where the trike needs it .....this is opinion only as ive never built a trike or ever tested trikes between stock carbs and custom carb mods ...but have with bikes and know a lot on both ways .....and have a good grasp on pluses and minuses of both set ups .....
