Recently bought an 81 Interstate for $1600, replace starter, shocks, sub-frame and cut out crossmember the center stand mounts to (welded new metal in place - no more list to port), misc wiring, fork seals, etc., etc,. Looking for advice on thermo switch replacement. Heard that NAPA has one that will match from a car??
Love to ride, love the GL. May do valve guide seals soon (white smoke upon start up). Fan switch no good, hard wired together, fan runs all the time, which means the rpms are a bit high so I cant fo a carb synch till i fix that issue. Oh, well. Not bad for a 32 year old bike.

Looking forward to sharing ideas with you all.

Dave from the 'Burg

p.s. would love to learn how to share a picture of the girl.

Welcome from California, Not sure if there is a cross reference list here but yes..There are quit a few things you can get from Nappa.
Happy trails.

Hi Dave, and welcome from Southern California! I don't want to scare ya, but if you're getting white smoke at startup, that's steam, not burning oil. Oil would be blue - white usually means coolant is getting into the cylinder(s). Is it on both sides? How's your coolant level? Valve guide seals or head gaskets - either way the heads will need to come off.

Welcome from California. Yes you can get a fan switch from Napa. Any temp switch that fits will work, what you want to know is at what temperature the switch closes (turns fan on). You can also get the belts from Napa and I recommend replacing them.
