Hi, I finally got a Goldwing, the wife said, "so how many bikes does that make?" But I needed something with a windshield to ride to Maine this August with some friends. I figure we'll get caught in rain at least once, and I don't want to be the one getting the mobile power washing. I'm anxiously awaiting my new (used) Clymer manual so I can continue the mechanical flogging that has already commenced. Oh...its a 1983 GL 1100 with 116k miles, cast alloy wheels with optional age-pitting and Vetter fairing. I don't know which version of luggage it has but as soon as I can figure out pictures I'll post a pic.

just for fun...kb

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have a lot of research to do because there is quite a bit of bluish smoke during warmup and I need to try and determine reliability before riding too far. I know about hot-start starter problems which I have, but I need to find out about the smoking and maybe replacing the valve stem seals. I don't have the right adapter for my compression tester yet but would that be a good test for leaky valve seals? I have 30 miles on an application of Seafoam to the oil and the gas. She runs strong, rides rock solid at 75 and starts easily when the starter is cold.

Welcome to the forum,
Try warming it up to where it doesn't smoke then use the center stand, next start see if it still smokes the next morning, Valve seals wont pass enough oil to smoke to any notable degree, If it cures it then it is probably seeping past the rings when it is on the side stand, I keep my oil level only half way up the window to prevent it.

Yes Omega, this seems to be an oddball combination, but I like the lines, and remember them from my youth. This purchase was a combination of haste, momentary lapse of reason, seemingly low price, and a good salesman. I have a lot of work to do to make it roadworthy. Tonight I am sandblasting the rear wheel in preparation for paint and a new tire. and the list keeps getting longer. But I took it out for a 30 mile shakedown cruise and fell in love. It was rock-solid at 75 mph on the expressway with no wind trying to rip me from the bars!

On another note, can someone tell me the minimum thickness of the rear rotor? I think this one might be thin and my new manual hasn't arrived yet.

still for fun, kerry

Thanks guys, I got my new (vintage ) manual in the mail, found the size stamped on the rotor, and bought another rotor from 1060dsl. I've been busy the last couple days, I just wanted to clean up some surface rust for appearance sake. Now I keep hearing the voices in my head saying stuff like "Oh God, what have I done?" Toaday I want to start getting some of the frame areas cleaned up.
