Hello, just introducing myself; been riding an 81 GL1100, well the frontend, engine, drive train & wheels are 81 GL1100 the frame has been chopped & refabbed into a rigid, running 22" ape hangers & a suicide shift. Just rebuilt the engine this last summer, stipped the primary gear which also damaged the drive gear off the crank, luckily no damage to the trani :clapping: Back on the road now, however still having a low charging off my stator. Concidering doing a alternator conversion @ some point, have read various threads on "poorboy" kit, just like to know; how do I go about finding the proper alternator? I've been reading of a one wire, 60 amp but would this be coming off a particular car?? Also the only auxillaries I run are; headlight, tail light & fan..

Thanks

Welcome to the CGW Forums, choppedwing!!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Welcome.

I would not use a one wire alternator, there is parasitic drain from the battery. It's enough to kill the battery in a few weeks.
I have one and have to disconnect the battery ground when not riding often.

Welcome from California, Just a thought and question. Since you aren't running a lot of lights and accessories why would you want a high amp alternator? I know you can get a 350 watt stator, and that will give you about 29 amps. The electrical system has a thirty amp fuse and if you look at the wiring I don’t think you would want to put much more than thirty amps through that primary wire, however I’m not an electrician.

I have a light bar on my wing and I wired a separate circuit for it because the wiring leading to the tail lights is pretty light (20 ga I believe). I also went to LED lights, now with everything on I’m only pulling 18 amps.
fornia.

I agree with OldWrench.
An undressed with stock lights really doesn't need any more than stock output.
With all the work and expense doing an external not to mention the eyesore of it on a standard, I'd replace the stator. It's not very hard to do.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I'd really like to take a look at the chopped & rigid wing.
Hey choppedwing, could you post a pic or two?
+1

I agree with keeping the stator - they are better now and without alot of extra bling you won't need an external alternator (stay away from the cheep knockoffs). They work well enough if you have a fairing to hide them under. Not sure if your bike is open because its the fairing that dullens the alternator noise, you will also have to relocate the rad both these things are less visable with a fairing but obvious with an open bike. Far as i know Poorboy supplies a pully and a mounting bracket most guys like to make up their own mounting brackets and I am not sure if Poorboy has changed but his pully was a 2" or 2 1/2" and most cases they discharge at idle. Beaver here makes a nice big pully I think Dan said he used one from a lawn mower and both do the job well.

Oh and BTW without pictures it ddin't happen !! Wecome to the site from Wainfleet the home of Rock and Roll according to the local farmers anyways!!
