I wish it was $4K !!! I'm afraid we have very different economies between our two countries and different again if you live in Western Australia.
The 1988 is a lovely bike, in very good condition, but is overpriced. The owner wants $9500 but might take $8-8500 waved under his nose.

ok andy is the '96 an interstate, aspencade or an se
does the '88 have cruse control, cassette player, and reverse

The 1996 is an Aspencade. The 1988 has cruise control, cassette / radio, intercom, UHF / VHF Radio, air suspension with ride height control, riders back rest, passenger arm rest with saddle bags. No mention of reverse gear

If I was buying a 6cyl I would prefer the latest model possible 1800 then 1500 but I know how that effects the budget and why I am extremely happy with my 81 1100. I sent you a pm Andy and would be happy to check out any close by GWs to me for you and your wife. I would be concerned by the 88 as You will pay just as high prices for repairs as the 96 and as detdrbuzzard said all the improvements should be on the 96

Thanks Ansimp, very much appreciated. I think that despite the higher kms, the 1996 is a better option, the guy in Perth is also very inflexible with his price and actually wants $9500, which is way over what it is worth.
The one we are very keen on is based in Goulburn NSW, I've spoken to the owner and agreed a price subject to inspection and I've sent an email to the ACT/southern NSW branch of the Goldwing Association of Aust, in the hope that they someone in the area who can have a look at the bike for me. If you know anyone down that end of the world, can you let me know.

the '96 being an aspencade will have a cassette / radio and intercom. all 1500 wings have air suspension, the right shock is an air shock the left shock is a spring shock without air. the '96 has reverse, important cause a 1500 weighs about 850lbs. if both have stock suspension the '96 has better front suspension. are you saying the owner of the '88 added a uhf / vhf radio or is it uhf / vhf with the cassette player? over here we call them am / fm cassette players, just trying to get the terminology right ause i know we call them cagers and you call them tin tops :)

it looks to me that the VHF/UHF radio is in addition to the radio/cassette, so either a factory option or added by the owner. We call them cagers too, might be different on the east coast - they're all a bit strange over there :)

They are strange in Adelaide and even stranger in Perth :good:
There are a few on eBay atm. One in Melbourne seems like good value

A bit more than I wanted to spend to be honest, we're adopting the principle that if we can get a bike at the right price, then we can get a taste of this 2-up touring. If all goes well, we can keep the bike, or upgrade, if not, we've lost nothing for the exercise.
This is the one I have agreed to buy;

Now if I can just find someone in the Goulburn area to run their eyes over the bike, I can arrange payment and transport :) Can't wait

 We seem to have similar tastes. Very nice, you won't be disappointed. :good:

~O~

I hadn't even noticed your blue Aspencade, I hope mine is as nice.
Any advice in respect to the GL1500, maintenance, things to check etc ??
The previous owners of the bike since new are all known to each other, but not to me, so its hard to work out what's been done and what hasn't.
I'm thinking that timing belts are a certainty, sync the carbs, replace the brake fluid, and the usual checks of electrical, brakes, suspension etc.

Is there anything else I should pay close attention to ?

the only problems i've had with my '93
alternator , changed last year
#3 relay ( controls the head light ) replaced last year
left shock, replaced with progressive shocks two years ago
fork seals replaced about two years ago
i've replaced brake pads every two years and oil cahnges done every 5000 miles
