Greetings all!

My name is Bob and I am from Northern Vermont. I have just been "given" (complicated and yet somewhat uninteresting story behind it.... I'll spare you all the details) a 1985 GL1200 Wing by my parents. I have been looking around for a, cheap, older GL for a while. While I personally was more interested in one of the naked GL's, I will certainly not turn this one down. The bike was owned by one of my Father's co-workers, Dad picked it up and in turn will be giving it to me. After 15 years of riding on a Yamaha Venture Royale, Dad bought one of the GL1800 Airbag models, so he's no stranger to tourers... but I digress...

I know what you're saying, "There's no such thing as a free bike." The '78 CB750 I own is a great testament to that. I got that bike for free too and have roughly between 6 to 7 grand invested. I am no stranger to turning wrenches, but with a mortgage and 4 year old boy, I'm hoping to spend slightly less on this bike.

The reason I am posting is this: The reason we picked up as cheaply as we did is that the bike is not running. It had been parked under a porch for the better part of two years. When the owner went to start it, it won't even turn over. He was going to part it out, but we snagged the whole thing. So my question to the brain-trust is this: Other than the obvious things to look for, is there anything on these old 1200's that I should look for when trying to bring it back to life? I should point out that I will soon have a service manual on the way and, technically, I haven't even taken possession of the bike yet. I just want to get a head start and know if there are any simple tricks to look for when I start wrenching on it.

Thanks all!
-Bob

Welcome to Classics from PA! When you say it won't turn over... do you men by hand or just by the starter?

By starter. I don't think the PO did a whole lot to try and remedy the situation. It could be a starter issue. That will be the second thing I check. I'm really hoping it is just a stuck float on a carb that filled a cylinder with gas. :)

welcome to classic ...hmmm first thing id do is take the timing belt covers off ... take the plugs out..sqirt in some lube spay maybe some atf fluid ... and use the crank bolt that exposed an try to move with short little pulls back and forth .. to see it it frees up dont force anything to hard ... and start a thread on the bike and report back what going on

Welcome from Southern California! After you get the engine to turn, the fuel system, timing belts, and brakes will be your priorities. Keep us posted, and we want pics!!!

Welcome from North TEXAS DFW area.... charge the battery and have it load tested also.. freebie check for that... +1 on what Joe said.. could be rust stick from moisture in the air... plan on filters change... air, gas, and oil... pb blaster will help lube cylinders ... take your time and go easy

Ha, ha... I have yet to be a member of decent forum where people didn't want pictures!

Well here she is in all her glory (complete with green mold) on the back of Dad's Trailer:

I have brought uglier back to life. :) There is hope.

I figured I would drop a picture of CD player install. Is there a "proper looking" kit out there to clean that up?

:thanks:

I got the twin to it. You'll love the 1200's. Great machines.

Looks like quite the project! I traded an 85 Cadillac to my dad for the 79 GL1000 I'm working on. I'm about $400 into it so far, and have another 600 just to get it back on the road.. hopefully. I haven't told my wife yet, but It'll probably be closer to a grand.. :-| Welcome and good luck!!!!!
