hi all

just got myself a sweet gl1100. low km at 34000. shes tidy and original through out. been doing a few mods and repairs to her to get her ready to ride for the next season.

heres how she looks.

problems are. she runs bad after a quick carb clean. lots of popping and banging with te new filters. hard to rev through.

need ideas for mounting front fender need clearance ofr mud once knobberlie tyre is on.


any mods you would do to get her ready for the woods or whoops.

So, you saw the Youtube video of two guys trashing GLs? You realize it was just for S&G and making the video? My suggestion (if you really want to head for the woods) is go find a bike with twice the suspension travel and half the weight!
 
Well I’ve seen some rather sweet dual purpose builds but mostly for looks not practical use...if one was serious ... I’d say a new front end would be required ...but the big mod as is see it would be motor tilt in the frame to get good ground clearance and the shaft drive no severely bent ...if those things were done the low center of gravity would make a killer ride in the off road adventure riding...in my opinion ...but some serious modding would have to be done to get there ..as made they are simply and road bike ...and aggressive tire would just dig it down faster to bottom out
 
Honestly, why would you want to take a road bike with 35K, try to make it a dual-sport, and then trash it in the dirt? The video was not meant to be a serious application of a touring bike.

If you want it to run properly, it will need a proper carb teardown and overhaul. After investing $200.00 and 5-10 hours doing that, you might have other notions than to just go off-roading with it.

If i wasn't on the opposite side of the continent, i'd offer you one of a dozen bikes I have in storage to just trash in the dirt, in exchange for what you have there.
 
I'm skeptical of a big bike like a Goldwing being an offroad bike. Seems like you'd want something where body english can throw the bike around. I'm even skeptical of the bigger "adventure" bikes to a degree, at least for their stated purposes.

But if you want to raise the front fender, I seem to recall they are held on with just a few bolts. Should be easy enough to build a bracket to elevate them.
 
I find it hard to comprehend how one would extol the virtues of having found a clean original GL, and then in the same topic propose raising the fenders for mud and knobbies for woods and whoops.

I may be getting crotchety in my older age, but I don’t expect you’re going to find a lot of support for that direction here.

Do something that would actually go good ....my biggest concern would be how well the final drive pumpkin would work in the mud ....certainly having no chain would be great ....sheesh if you had a hooch motor in it ...it could climb trees
 
first i'll say welcome to CGW!! hope you get it running properly soon. as an owner of a BMW R1200 GSA i'll say be happy you haven't taken it off road, the GSA is no light weight motorcycle and once all that weight gets a little out of control it is very hard to get it back on course even on hard packed dirt. it can get tiring picking one up after dropping it a couple times, your friends get tired of helping you pick up your behemoth too. f you still want to go off roading on your wing at least remove all the tupperware you can
 
About the closest thing to a Goldwing that you could take off-road with any hope of success, would be to put the front end of a GL1000 on a CX-500, or a GL-500... as that'll give you substantially more ground clearance... but you'd be much happier on an FT-500 Ascot... or a DR-400 Suzy.

The GL has lots of plumbing underneath, and because the ports are down there, you can't escape damage. Wide cylinders low means you won't go far before getting hung up or high-sided... but don't let that stop you... please, have friends take video, so we can watch and laugh!!!

Now, if you take that engine, and make a mini sand-rail with fully independant suspension with LOTS of travel, it's a different story- I'm sure the GL motor will motivate a light sandrail very nicely...
