Picked this up last month, up in VA, cheap. 33k miles

Nasty gas tank, chocolate milk oil, 68 miles put on it since the 2007 title transfer.
Guy I bought it from found it sitting in a barn, bought it a battery and some filters, then he took sick.

Removed all the tins/plastic and hit them with some Rustoluem gloss black.

Made it run , briefly, after letting the carbs fill up with Seafoam and soak a few days.
Fired right up after I drained that out and temp-plumbed a fuel supply.

Didn't expect much, but it did idle. Revved it a few times to 2+k, shut it down.

A fellow hobby mech is checking the carbs and will let me know what parts they needs beyond bowl seals.
He is quite familiar with them and I'm tickled to let him have at it.

I did pull the heads the other day and prepped them for new gaskets.
Still need to check out the valvetrains.
Water pump cavity had no oil in it, but I'm pretty certain the oil pump area had a bad seal allowing the coolant to mix with the oil.
It'll get all new seals and o-rings, debating on a new water pump. This one looks pristine and feels tight. 68 miles new, tight.

Lots to do, learning as I go. I have a Clymer manual, internet in the garage and a bit of common sense.
Hoping to finish it up for Spring. Haven't had or ridden a motorcycle since 92.
Looking forward to racking up some miles.

I'll post more pictures if it'll get my post count up enough to view forum pictures and videos.
Welcome from southern California, awesome looking wing.

Hello there earl, the bike looks extremely clean in your truck there, I'm looking forward to those photo's you got coming...oh and welcome to the site...

I do have high hopes for this ride.

One of my goals is to ride it back up to Spotsy where I got it.
Funny thing about finding it. Guy had it listed on Craigslist for a while. I was looking for a runner, but a bike I was planning to go buy on Sunday in Covington, VA got sold on Saturday. Got on C-list and saw the ad for this one still there, called the guy. Turns out, he lives in a subdivision that I used to live in from 88 to 99. Nice family, 4 more cycles in his garage. I'd like to show it to him, running and painted up purty, just like he was planning to do with it.

I was planning to leave it at my son's or brother's house until a return trip with a trailer, but it rode so well back there, I just took it on home (3 hrs away). I took backroads except for a little of 95S and 64E. VA Rt. 30 is now my favorite route, as a result of wanting to avoid high speed interstate traffic.

The pistons and all got cleaned up with a military rifle cleaning (nylon?) brush, paintbrushes cut short and kerosene. I'm a sucker for the smell of kerosene for cleaning. Never gas, sometimes carb/choke cleaner, brake cleaner, etc. but kerosene just "does it" for most of my projects. I'll be flushing out the chocolate milk crankcase residue with a gallon of it unless someone has a better idea.

The engine paint recommendation came from a post/thread I read on THIS SITE.

I'm in a bit of a quandry what to do with the groady timing covers. Lots of pitting down low. I was thinking just a quick scuff and more of the engine enamel, but I may oven cleaner the clear off (also read that here) and start buffing since I have two wheels and rouge sticks. I'm not the most patient fella.

They'll get the enamel, of course.

Got nothing against good ol' kerosene,And I dig the smell just like you.Not in my hands thou :nea: .Wouldn't be a bad engine cleaner at all but I guess others may be using newer products nowadays.I think i'm a bit nostalgic at times...thats all .For the covers I like aluminum more than enamel but thats just me.As a teen worked in a bike shop were most of them were brit bikes and all the covers would be polished,I guess that's were I got that liking bare aluminum look from.Cylinders would be blacked enameled.

Timing belt covers look great in gloss black too. You could paint the coolant plumbing gloss black as well to stand out more.
