:clapping: Congratulations! Don't burn this one up trying to get the bugs and gremlins moved out. :whistling:

That second link shows exhaust being dropped on a 1000 to pull the starter.
Is that necessary?
Not so on an 1100.
Also the 1100 chain and sprocket cannot move like described then requiring engine removal. Don't know about the 1000.

Wow you leave the exhaust on, I remove mine just to have more room to work, but one thing I do different is this, I put the bike on the centerstand and I have never had a issue finding the hole.....No Jokes now...don't go there.. Guy's...

hmmmmm now im confused not sure how idid it on the 83 ......seems like i did it when there was no backwheel on it....if so it would have been centerstand....there must be rough miling on the starter shaft or gear....put some compound or some grit of some kind and work the gear and the strarter shafttogether back and foourth and try to work them into a better fit or something like that ....rhis has gotten to far and must be a reason for not fitting good....thats what id try now at this point ...use grease or somthing as a lubricant and matye work the two together firt without grit just hand pressure one side then the other side....

I have been fighting with a new starter for hours and still can not get it lined up very tight
Wow, it's never taken me more than 5 minutes, maybe the o-ring needs to slide in better, I used my tire lube solution stuff I get from Napa and put some on the o'ring so it slides in with ease and it won't hurt the rubber. Are you getting it into the gear hole ok and it's just not going in tight...?

Ok, let's stay on your topic, I knew it.... :head bang: :smilie_happy:

Well you are entitled to a few cuss words about right now, I wonder if the two starters are made exactly alike, it's apparent the end gear isn't , but maybe the parts are interchangable, so you could put back in the original gear end from the old one into the new one..I don't know if that's possible, I have never done it so I can't say, I'm just thinking here..but we know the old one fits....I bet you feel like kicking something right now..Sorry man..This is what I would do, I would count the teeth, on both..and hope like hell the one you bought has more teeth or less teeth..factory screw up...Then I'd take an adjustable wrench and check the circumference of the gear and compare it with the old one, it may be a mm larger, again factory screw up.... Hopefully someone you know has the sprocket gear that's in the engine there just laying in there shop..having a gear in hand and fitting it off the bike you could put it on and take it off about twenty times just to breakin the gear a little if it fits and also you will know 100% that the gear is to big and I'm sure it is..Hopefully it's under warranty ....Might work.. I don't know..Hang in there...

Did you finally get it on? I read of someone using a large magnet to move the gear around from the backside there..
