After looking over several 'big' bikes, I realized that GW's seem to be the best value for a large road eating bike. I love my KLR, but 60+ on any road is more than I want after 30 minutes.

I searched CL and found a 77 for $475 that needed work, but more work than I was up to. Last night a 83 Interstate was posted with 38k miles for $1100. Called him, looked @ it on lunch break, test rode it and told him I would need to investigate what it takes to rebuild the sticking master cyls. I incidentally had 7 $100 bills in my pocket, told him that and he said, give me 8 and its yours. Left him with 1 bill to take it off CL.

There is nothing missing, all locks work, paint is shiny and the only rust spots are the rear grab bar under the back of the seat. A couple of scratches on the hard bags. Seat has no tears and is soft. Pipes and crash bars look great. Motor starts and runs up smooth. Surprised I was @ 60 without getting blasted by wind like my KLR. Now begins the questions on small issues:

1. No air in rear shocks. I suspect air leak/seals. Front had about 15. Nice little honda air gauge in tool box.

2. Combo linked brakes are dragging. Pedal is soft and return is weak. Pull up hard and you and turn the rear tire while on the center stand, but they stick again if you use them. My careful test drive was completed without the rear brake.

3. Not sure how a wing shifts, but this one felt nice and solid and in gear, but was clunkier than my KLR. Fresh oil and some use my be helpful. Clutch could use some exercise I bet.

4. Drive shaft had a tiny bit of 'play', but if I remember other shaft bikes, it is common to have a little smack, similar, but not as distinct as a chain. Again, new oil may help.

5. Previous owner put a spare horn on it that was then taken off and there is only one horn. Where there 2?

6. PO put a toggle switch for the headlight on the fairing, but when you turn off the headlight, the turn signals flash very fast and not very bright. Not too big an issue, since the headlight will always be on.

7. Rear tire was replaced recently as the owner was preparing to ride it. Front looks aged, a new one will go on.

Anyway, as I drove home, I laughed because my wife just left for 3 days of camping with some girls in our church. She will be SHOCKED to see this beast in the garage.

Doing some oil changing tonight. :clapping:

Congrats and welcome to the Gold Wing world!

She looks to be in very good condition, more pics please!

What you describe are very minor problems. Brake fluid change may even take care of the soft feel but check the hoses carefully for any bulging.

These are strong long life bikes. Once you get the little bugs out she'll run a good long time trouble free.

I got my 83 Aspencade last fall and the brakes were really bad. U ended up rebuilding all three calipers and new pads and they work lots better. I am still going to unlink the brakes when I get new lines. I don't care for the linked brakes.

I think you will love you new acquisition as much as I love mine...

:cool!: Welcome snowlover a little TLC on the brake system and I think you'll be suprised with them, also like your user name when the weather changes here so does my play toys
Winger 82 :hi:

Home safely in the garage. Nothing other than the few issues mentioned above so far. Have not even washed it off. The wheels are dirty and could use some attention, but it runs ok. Very smooth when you accelerate. Not sure if it seems noisy @ idle, or just not used to 4 cylinders yet.

Have to show off with a couple of pics.

That was a great deal! Good luck with her! :clapping: :clapping:

If you have any questions, this is the place to ask. And don't forget that the only dumb question is the one that you didn't ask.

Dan,

Is that an '83 Interstate vs Aspy? I noticed no radio or other similar items and it seems that it has solid rotors like from an '80 or '81. Did any of the '83's have solid rotors vs vented rotors?

Thats-a Nice-a Bike!!! :clapping: :good:
Most of what you listed above would fall in the "preventative maintenance" category. A little TLC will have that thing in great shape in no time at all.
There would be two horns, btw.
The rear shocks may hold air, but just may not have had any, or it may not even need any for solo riding...depends on if the springs are stock or aftermarket. Blow some air in them(20-30psi) and see if it leaks out.
Mine kinda "clunks" when shifting into 1st most of the time. I think mine has more to do with the oil I use than anything.
The headlight being on or off shouldn't have anything to do with the turn signals...sounds like someone may have got some wires wrong on that.

Overall, I think you got a great deal, and a really nice looking 'Wing!

It's an Interstate without the audio option. It probably wasn't ordered with sound originally.

The Aspencade (I believe only the '83 model) came with vented rotors. All other model 1100's came with solid non vented rotors.

She's a beaut!. Great deal you got.

The noisy at lower speed could be it needs the carbs synchronized or it could have slightly dirty idle jets which might clear up just putting miles on but you could run some Seafoam carb cleaner in a couple tanks worth. Good stuff to clean up the carbs.

Welcome,
Very nice deal forsure. The 83s are of thr finest goldwings built.
As for the brake draging, check the peddle. It is not unheard to have it get stiff on the shaft.Easy fix, just clean it up and re lube it.

I believe the 83 Aspencade was the only one with the new rotors which are larger and vented. The 83 Aspencade also has an on-board air pump under the shelter.

Great looking bike, you'll love her.

Yep, 83 Interstate.

Brake pedal is a little sticky, but rear still is locking up. My previous Honda needed the return hole cleaned out in the master cyl.

How do you get the beast up on the center stand? Am I just a wimp?

Not an oil brand thread, but what weight is recommended. It does not get scorching hot or freezing cold here in WA.

Do you only put grease in the rear shaft via the zerk? No 90 weight or such?

BTW, I see another GW and KLR owner :good:

well for me i have to to get help to put it on the centerstand ....then i watch somebody do it who is so much smaller than me .......my wife has a better shot at it than i do
id say 10 w 40 on the oil

that grease zerk is almost useless .....i think its recommended 2 shots every 6 months or a yr all it dose is go in the empty swingarm cavity.....

theres a plug on the final drive that the 90wt gear oil gose in

theres a night and day difference in the 83 1100 and the 77 1000 that you were looking at ....and from your post i think this bike fills your desire of a big dreeser better than the 77 ......the 77 was design to be a street running fast bike and the 83 is honda best dresser concept in a still user friendly package.....

ive got an 83 dresser that im going to pic up soon and i cant wait to fix it up ....it looks like yours except its black.....

The zerk is intended to grease the driveshaft coupling.

Center stand, bike in neutral,
with your right foot pushing the center stand squarley to the floor, your left hand on the left grip keeping the front wheel straight,
pull up on the left grab bar (right next to the seat) with your right hand while pushing down on the center stand.
The center stand is a bit of a lever so use more force pushing down on it with your foot than pulling up with your hand.

Once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy.
If there's no air in the shocks or stuff in the bags or trunk it's harder to do.

The 82 Aspencades also had vented rotors.

Nice bike...you got a great deal. Last Sept. I paid double what you paid for my 83 I with 29,000 miles. Change the timing belts if the age/mileage isn't verifiable (might as well change the radiator hoses while you're at it.) I rode mine for the remainder of the season when I got it...I kept the RPM's low and didn't lug the engine either and I got away with it. The old belts didn't look bad but had the Honda part number on them and probably were the 30 year old originals...
