Oil coolers?

Does anyone have or know of an oil cooler for an 1983 Goldwing?

i dont know of any .......but the goldwing has an oil cooler of sorts.....by the water pump the oil and water go right passed each other creating an water cooled oil system .....which by the way is more consistant than air oil cooler.....only at wind speed do the air oil coolers work and work good at speed ......but the water cooler is more consistant .........and realy good with the thermostat out and a manual switch for the fan .....this gives cooling control over the water and oil.......

you realy dont want those bottom air dams for the goldwing as they block the air to the filter housing which has fins to cool the oil with air.....my thoughts

Anything you can do to let more air flow over the radiator and engine will help.
Those fancy heavy chrome grill guards that go in front of the radiator are murder for air flow.

not if you want air flow to the oil filter cover with its fins it made to cool the oil some ......thats the way i see it :crying: :mrgreen: they do look good :mrgreen:

I'v run my 83 with grill, without grill, with and without air dam. and I don't see any difference in temperature, it just gets to the notch in the gauge and stays there... two up uphill in the heat of the day...
I know the thermostat is working, cause I can see a very small increase just before the fan starts to run.. :music:

I removed my chrome grill and reverted back to just a rock guard and my temps dropped when moving by 1/4 gauge during 95 degree air temps. I will not go back to the chrome grill!

:shock: HOLY CRAP :shock: I better keep on my chrome grill! I only run at quarter gauge,I cant afford it to drop a quarter,the choke would have to always be on. :shock:

Im with you.I realize we are im MI but its been a constant 90s summer and I have an air dam,glass engine covers,t-stat and chrome grill guard and the hottest Ive been this summer was in 103 degree temp,on new asphalt in heavy traffic in charlotte NC and even then only 1/2 gauge.

Seems like if the cooling system is working like it should,with all it componants in tack this shouldnt be a problem.But if my bike was running warm,Id start removing anything that would help,Id thin the antifreeze(water cools better),add some water wetter or 40 below...you name it,but esentually Im helping fight the symtom but not fixing the original problem.

I'm with ya Tory! In my bike, I kinda had to guess what normal was becuase it was a dead bike when I got it.

After switchin and swapping engines, radiators and other parts the normal temp on the gauge was always at 1/2 when fully warmed, but I was warmed right along with it. Pulling the chrome grill (and adding the correct air deflectors) really helped reduce the temp and it stayed steady thereafter (1/4 gauge).

Could be that the '81 radiator from the parts bike is not up to snuff. I removed the original '82 radiator because it sat outside for 12 years with a dead engine.

I like the idea that the oil is cooled, I didn't know that before!

:hi: My 80 runs 1/2 all the time even at 75 mph at 108 ambiant temo over nev. roads from Sparks to Lovelock and back...even up over the Highest pass in cal in heavy trafic... I guess that is normal for this bike....did have a heating problem a few month ago but changed the temp sending unit and it went away...Bob

Ah,now where on to something.
With or without chrome,the air defectors are an important part of the cooling system.

I tried that Rolls Royce grill for awhile. The temp would run at least a 1/4 gauge scale warmer in 90 plus temps.
When your running around on L.A freeways and streets in those air temps, that much more heat equals A LOT more stress physically especially sitting on a asphalt freeway in rush hour.
If anyone wants this grill I'm happy to get rid of it.

hey i like those grills you can send them to me ......i run without a thermostat and the grill works good for me .....i need a nice shiney one for my 83 interstste and the rest of my bikes too :beg: :mrgreen:

A comparison is a good idea because I think the one I have has smaller openings than the one posted in mcgoverns link.

As you can see also in his pic the air deflectors on the dressed bike as part of the fairing lowers are designed to direct air flow into the radiator.
The Rolls Royce grill will block a lot of that.
The deflectors on the dressed is a weak design, the Standard model uses much larger and way more efficient panels to catch and direct air.
I put those on mine in front of the fairing lowers, they make a huge difference.
Also JD has the chrome scoop. Looks to me like it will force air upward to the radiator.
