it will tug it im sure ...but what the point the 80 is more suited to me ...if there ever was hack and trailor tug oldwing its 80 -81 hands down ...especially two at once like you do

Never really pay all that much attention to the tach when I'm ridin, all my shiftin is done the old school way ( by ear and feel ) yes I do try to grab another gear from time to time and it's not there cause there aint no more. so I'm happy with an old 82 Asppy that can get 45-50 mpg with two up if I don't get to itchy with my right wrist. now ridin solo that's a different story all together :moped: :moped: :moped:

I ride 40 miles one way to/from work every day....95% of that 80 miles a day is at 80 mph/5300 rpm....mine runs as smooth as it could at that rpm....it's happy there. It was a bit un-nerving when I first bought it to run it up that high, but....I have since accepted that there really ain't a lot that will hurt these engines, as long as they are taken care of. My speedo stops at 85 mph, which is about 5500rpm.....I've had it up to 7000rpm passing slowpoke goobers, and it just runs right up there with no lag, hesitation, or gripes. Have no clue how fast(mph) it is, but it still has more to give...more than I do....my brain at that speed is telling me to shut it down, dummy... :smilie_happy:

:good: 4K at 70-ish seems to be a 'sweet spot' that the engine really likes. I never get the sense that the motor is doing anything but truckin' down the highway....
And has been mentioned above, redline is a long way away, so just enjoy!

+1 :rocks:

Well I guess I will just relax and let her rev, as long as I know it is ok at that rpm, I am good.

Here's a link to a handy gear/rpm/speed calculator I used to figure my bike with. It's extremely close if filled out properly being only 46 rpm off at 60 mph. There's no need to enter the secondary trans ratio. Since the calculator was designed to figure a sprocket and chain setup, just fill in your gear ratio at the red star on each line. This will let you know approximately what rpm you should be turning in different gears at different speeds. https://woodsware.aciwebs.com/gears/

Going from some very busy inline four bikes to the wings. I never really paid much attention. Okay my 80 and 81 are probably the lowest geared but both seem quite happy at 70mph with lots of throttle left.

oldmopars: Ibajim just did an ss1000 and I'm trying to find out if he did it on the 1100 wing he had been working on or if he took his ST 1100. he hasn't posted much here so I went on advrider to find out

I have owned and rode motor cycles since I was in my Teens , everything between a CB160 Honda about late 60's , to a couple of 900Z1 Kaw's 1973 and 74 ... BUT in the last 10 years , I have owned 5 Goldwings , 1980 1100 , 1981 1100 , 2 - 1983 1100 , and now my 1986 1200 SE-I ... every time i went UP in year of the Goldwing I really went Up in Power and Smooth , if you look at how Honda Changed Tire size every year on the early Goldwings , its plain to see they was searching for the perfect , speed , RPM , MPG , and Open Road Riding . and they kept getting better and better . this SE-I , that i have now is the best I have owned for the kind of riding I do , I'm in North East Tn. 90 miles from the Great Smokey Mountains , I Love to do a lot of mountain riding , twisty roads , but i also ride I-40 to Knoxville to buy Guitar Strings and things , and often run it up over 100 mph ... with plenty of go left . I have not owned a 6 cyl. Goldwing yet ... and may never own one , but I can't imagine how there could be much improvement if you take in fact the weight difference of a much bigger eng. , but of course they do have 2 extra pistons pumping out power too.. :laptop: . . . Just My Opinion . :hi:

I just came back from a 1800 mile trip with my 1200 Interstate.... I did better than my 1500,,, which I traded yesterday... My 1200 rides better and gets better mileage than the 1500... I am missing some toys that the 1500 had but thats ok... I can cruise at 75 mph towing a camping trailer and I do not even feel it back there... 1200's rule...

My '82 turns about 4K RPMs at 110kph (70mph). But I always wear ear plugs and with almost no vibration it just hums along happily. I think 110kph is the sweet spot. :Egyptian:

Having said that, there are some nice 80kph (50mph) roads around Calgary with very little traffic. I like to take the windshield off and cruise on them with the breeze in my face. It's a great stress reliever.

In my personal experience I adored my 79 (crashed her into a deer at 60 mph) but it was just a standard and would run like a raped ape 70 mph (in memory) was around 3800 rpm which is roughly the same as my 87 aspencade loaded with a trailer. 3200 rpm empty with just me on it at 70. If you feel as though you pushing too hard on your 1100 just ignore the tach and listen to it run it on up at 90ish and when it hits the sweet spot and you can not only feel it but hear it you will understand fully what that bike is capable of. My 1100 standard was a perfect scrap yard find for a 14 yr old kid to restore sadly that was 15 yrs ago
