Needed to replace Glowplugs on the Diesel Forester and started with the most obviouse one as they are $144 AUD each. Number one looked stuffed ( the center/anode was hanging out) and didn't seat all the way down like the others. Worked back and forth slowly ( over half an hour and plenty of sweat) to remove the offending glowplug and this was my final reward
Aluminium head material attached to the threads of the old glowplug
I cut up the old glowplug and put some slots in the thread to use as a tap. Eventually I had to admit defeat and the possibility of engine out and head off to repair. As it was a 10x1 mm thread and a recoil kit would be expensive and at least another days delay I rang a mobile thread restorer.
New Glowplug
How far it should screw into the head leaving the nut almost flush with the casting. The one I was replacing sat out about 12mm further
Working conditions of the glowplug hole on top of the right hand head
The thread restorer was a champion. He cleaned out the old threads with a tap and hoped to pickup some good threads. Unfortunately we hadn't any good threads as it appeared that the glowplug was originally ( I beleive a replacement one by PO etc) cross threaded. We still couldn't seem to get the new one to seat properly so we drilled ( me with his long drill bit) down to clean out the first step. The glowplug still wouldn't seat properly and eventually I said lets just put a thread insert in and I will lock it up in the same position as before. I would of used a helicoil/recoil kit if I had purchased one instead he used a Time Sert which I had never seen before and definitely approved of.
