The bike was ready, the trailer was ready and so was I. Left my driveway at 8:00am on Aug 2,2012.Headed 75 miles to meet up with my riding buddy. At 70 miles I hit what I thought was a huge chuckhole. Looked in the rearview and saw nothing. The road was new and thought how could a pothole appear? I rode the last 5 miles to our meeting point. Got off the bike and my buddy said "What did you do???" I looked at the front end.

Then we looked at the other side:

The brace had wrapped around the front wheel. MAN was I very lucky!!!

Took us one hour to get it off. We rode off with no front fender. Got to the Missourri River and made camp.

At the end of the day We found a campsite. Just outside the camp was a house with a big pile of junk. We both said did you see that motorcycle? We went back and looked. Asked the guy if he would sell the front fender. He was glad to sell it. He had a front flat tire and parked it there 8 years ago. What a shame to let a good bike go to rust. BUT I did have a fender in less than 10 hours after losing my original one.

Spent about 4 hours dealing with the tailights on the trailer.
Got up and on to Sturgis. Halfway through Iowa the sky turned very black in an instant. If it was not a toronado-- I never want to be in one. Lasted about 1/2 hour.

Made it to Custer S.P.

The pullye conversion had NO problems. I ran the gps, cig lighter, fuzz buster, the 12 volt cooler, and all the lights for the bike and trailer.

3318 miles round trip. I am very glad I had a wet vest to sty cool with. Definitly cooled for about 5 hours at a time.

Had not seen that many bikes at one place ever. They were all over. The black hills was a stream of bikes on all the roads.

Very good trip can not wiat for another trip to come up.

hmmm ..that's for sure!! any idea what the cause was? did you find loose bolts when you had a look or dealt with it? perhaps an unseen crack in the fender?? anything the rest of us should look out for?

Too many arm pits for me..I had enough of that working Construction...Looks like fun for everyone that likes large crouds, I don't, it makes me nervous, but that's just me .. A great experience I bet.. Awesome photographs, and thanks again for the post card Wilcoy...Now that's what camping is all about, Yesssss :smilie_happy:

click on the pics of the bikes on the street(to enlarge)--That really shows how many bikes were there. It was about 8 blocks solid bikes.

I had the addy of little beaver in my trunk from the pulley. So thought you would appreciate that card. I got the card at the ORIGINAL shop where sturgis started. The owner of the bike shop showed us where the original race track was and where everyone camped for it back when it started. Now it has gotten so big that it moved uptown and he is about 2 miles from it now. He had about 30 OLD bikes there for sale. 1940's and 50's. a very good price tag on them too.
