Hi! My 82 runs only on no 3 & 4 cylinders, have checked plugs, wires, coils and spark generators. Clymer manual tests pulse generator between blue and blue/white and blue and white. Readings does not make sense! Any other way to get to the generator without removing swing arm?

The engine would have to come out, only other way.

There are 2 coils for 4 cylinders, each pair of cylinders use the same coil, 4&3 and 2&1.
Have you tried swapping them to see if the problem moves to the other cylinder pair?

The plug next to the battery going to the pickup coils on mine had a loose connection causing it to drop 2 cylinders.
I cut the plug out soldered in a 4 wire trailer male and female.

This could most likely be a small problem. Before you spend 5 hours R&I on the engine, you didn't state what are the 2 other cylinders doing? Are they not sparking? Are they still getting fuel? Do they not fire at all, or hot, or cold running?
If those 2 cylinders are wet with fuel, but no spark, work your way up the plug wire, to the coil. Do what the previous reply said about swapping the coils. Hopefully one of the coils is bad, and no need to diagnose further. Next check the condition of the 2 CDI units. The black epoxy on the back that protects the internal wiring, melts away, and can cause problems. I changed these out last summer, and what a difference.
If there is no fuel there, the carbs may be next.
Let us know how you made out.

Thanks!
I have had my 80 GL1100 with 80K miles, for 12 years.
I've rebuilt, changed, painted, polished, and taken everything on this bike apart.
Hope I can help answer questions, or give some advise, to help keep these bikes going.

We are always looking for advice! Post some pics of your ride! :music:

Problem solved!!!!!!
Found dry connection between pulse generator and spark generator.
TIP!!! With a longnose pliers, give all the contacts a wee bend, push plug in and remove again, check for bent contacts- if all is OK, connect and GO!!
Problem seems to be in carb of no 1 cylinder - 3 others are good.
Will try some carb cleaner in the tank - doesn't feel like removing carbs.
Thanks for all replies
