I would like to ask a question about the spacer or spacers on my rear axle, I only had one on my 81 gl interstate but I know the 82's have two spacers, one goes into the wheel on the inside of the caliper and the other is smaller and goes on the outside of the caliper, mine didn't have that one on the outside..Is this right or wrong or what..

Does this help?

Thank you for the info, if you look there is only one #3 collar[spacer] that sits in the inside of the caliper I don't see a second one but I have seen one before on the 82's the other collar shown on the list looks nothing like the one I'm talking about, the one I'm talking about looks like the #3 collar but smaller..I ordered one of ebay because I thought mine was missing, it's on the bike now but I am trying to make sure it's supposed to be there..Thanks again for the info..I don't want to put something on it that's not supposed to be there ha ha..I was sure I didn't lose it when I first got it..If it's there in the picture, I don't see it..

The question came up once before about those spacers and which goes where.
I hope this pic helps.

Yes sir, you see the spacer on the outside of the caliper, I didn't have that one, are the 81 models the same as that photo..If it is I have it right now, and was missing that spacer..I got one off ebay, thanks guys for the help, yeh thanks alot.. where is that sucker in the schematic..

The pic is my '83.
As it goes together there's no room left over, it's a snug fit.
This is whats freaking me out, when I looked on ebay for rear axles for the 81's they all had only one spacer, then I went to the 82's and 83's and they had two, I never found a 81 with two..Weird..Mine looks just like the photo now and it was a good fit so I don't really see a problem..Thanks again ScdMarx, Dan

My '81 rear had a different size spacer than my '82. When I was swapping rear brake calipers I had to swap out the arm that holds them and found out the spacers were different.

Ok guys, here is the scoop on my question, it looks like I was right on this, there's a spacer on the 81's that goes on the inner side of the brake caliper and the other is a washer , I did some searching on the bandits site at the schematics there and it shows the 82's have the spacer shown in Dans photo however the spacer for the 81 is but a washer called a spacer, the reason it's not on the schematic above is because it's shown on the schematic for the rear brake's and caliper  Wow.. Aren't you glad that I'm so nosey I just had to know, it seems to me they made a change from the washer type to the contained type I guess they serve the same purpose, Spacer...

beav
ran into this exact same problem last summer with a tire change.
I can tell you that if you have an 83 and you don't have that spacer in the right spot you will eat the side right off a new tire :D
the PO must have totally had the final drive disassembled and when it got reassembled they mistaked the outer spacer for a piece inside the final drive at the opposite side of the axle..
a very knowledgeable older mechanic at my local Honda shop called me back into the shop to show me the mistake, and the correct installation... it made a huge difference.
he also showed me the honda service manual dosnt even have a compleat exploded veiw.

Thanks for the pic Dan
it shows clearly the last outside spacer that I was missing.

your doing great work beav keep it up bro.

Yes, so I wanted to show everyone the difference from the schematic's, the first one is for the 81 model and the second one is for the 82 and 83 models...View attachment 1 both are marked as #1 in schematic's

I wonder, will the 81, 82 and 83 layout work on either wheel and frame?
I mean, does the total thickness end up being the same?
Dan If I had a washer I could answer your question but I do not, I chased my tail on this for a while now..Finally Scdmarx put that schematic up and the light bulb went on.. I sure hope so because I have the 82 spacer on my 81 bike as we speak  it looked to be about the thickness of a thick washer, it fit perfectly with no issue like clockwork.... I Do Not Wish to Die because of it  :smilie_happy:

They are not interchangable. My '81 parts were different than my '82 parts and the brake arm is different. I do not remember which was bigger or smaller, but I did have great difficulty when I dropped all of them into the same can and tried to put it back together!

Yes, if anyone ever has a problem matching these up the one with the longer sleeve goes into the wheel the other one won't fit it anyway so it has to go on the outside of the caliper..

it winds up the same in width im sure ive had the one axcle and brake on the other swingarm in the mongruel for yrs.....
That the thing Joe, the difference between an '81 and '82 rear brake control arm and washers, they don't fit. I racked my brain for hours trying to figure out where we went wrong when we swapped out the frames. I had to try each spacer and brake control arm until I got a combination that finally worked without the tire rubbing, or the calipers would not line up with the rotor.

Had the same problem on my 83.I had a tire rubbing on the right side but thought it was the tire.So I put a different tire on and now it is rubbing on the left side brake arm.So I will have to take it back down and dent the arm for clearence as someone suggested on this site.I am sure I have the spacers right.Just do not understand why it rubbs now and never did before.

check carefully zcarron
after getting mine right I noticed the rim was alot closer to the final drive, the space I lost on the right was the same amount I gained on the left.
now it fits perfect and right in the middle (same spacing on both sides)
this is with the new dunlop E3

Now that I have taken a second look at Dan's pictures I can clearly see where I have a spacer in wrong. On the wheel side of the arm it looks like I have the spacer backwards. There is a halve inch space next to the wheel on the inside.I don't know if I am saying this right .You have the spacer next to the caliper next to the pinch bolt then the one on the other side next to the wheel. There is a half inch space there t6hat should not be there.Have I confused everyone yet?
