just a general question.. is the final drive unit and wheel insert a different ratio in the 83 VS the 81??? if it is the same then i won't pursue it ... my thinnking is this.. if it is different because of the 16 inch wheel , then putting it on my 17 inch wheel should lower the running rpms if not then I need to rethink my process here.. this thought came from changing the sprockets on a GS 550 suzuki to change the ratio a bit and drop running rpms 500 rpm in 6th... ( only wanted small change...)

sorry joe but the 81 and 80 already has the best touring final drive the 83 is slightly different but in the wrong direction if you want to lower your rpm at touring speed.... the biggest difference is in reduction from the motor to the trans that causes the higher rpm on the 80 and 81 yrs

the two wheels will interchange on the 1100s 16 and 17 in. wheels but the 16 would raise the rpm even more

Joe is correct.

The 1980 and '81 final drive is 3.091, The 1982 and '83 is 3.1.
It's a very small amount but did seem to make a difference on mine when I put a '81 final in my '83.
Your best bet is to run an '80 or '81 final drive with a 17 inch wheel.

Or you can try my method; swap out your '81 engine for an '83 engine! :smilie_happy: (Not the cheapest method!)

BUT! It lowered my rpm at 70 MPH from 5200 RPM to 4000 RPM. I have an '82 final drive and '82 16" wheel.
