I rebuilt front master and calipers, job went great.
rear end, started with the master, and not so much.

the area where circlip snaps in lost metal to corrosion. inside it looked fine, I thought good enough to re-assemble. had worked this long anyway..
I was pumping the foot pedal, my foot slipped off on the up-stroke and pedal released, then snap ring/circlip popped back out of the master cylinder. I am not sure if I can make this work.. trip to the hardware store for a bigger meaner snap ring comes to mind but I'm not confident that's a permanent solution.

question is, does anyone know of rear master cylinder available new, or from other bikes that would bolt-on?

Here is my very temporary solution, that I used on Tony's (Ansimp) '81 "Rat's Nest". It held together for a couple of years...enough time to find a replacement, or a better solution.

The 1800 master cylinder works well on Dan's '83, which has the linked brake system, and a slightly larger piston diameter. It might work OK on an '82, which also has dual-piston calipers, but no link to one of the fronts.

thanks for replies, that solution for the 81 rear master is brilliant. looks similar to what I'm dealing with.

I used a pick to carefully make a very small increase in depth of the channel and bought that bigger snapring from hardware store. it's pumping now.

if it comes off again I might have to add that wire for extra security.

There's a "known-bad" rear master for $250 on ebay right now.. ebay emailed me this morning to remind me that I looked at it but didn't buy it. Thanks ebay..

I have back brake working for right now though.
