around 10 miles from the house I hit a pothole,,, that's as far as I made it,, the rear shocks collapsed,, came loose from the top,, and had to bring the bike home on a trailor... ? there's no springs inside? I really don't want this to happen again,, to anyone.. so how can they be rebuilt with an "it will get u home" feature?

"Came loose from the top"?? What th' heck dya mean?
Did they actually come OFF of the studs? Did the top break off?
There are springs inside the shocks, if they are factory shocks, that is.
Take a look at my rear shock rebuild deal...it will give you an idea of what's inside. :good:
Rear Shocks

Here's the write-up on the rebuild.

no,, they didn't break off the studs,, the top came loose,, as opposed to the bottom of the shock being the moving part of the shock,, the top came loose,,, exposing the seals,,, and as far as spring goes,, you could sure fool me,,, they were pancake flat.... I would air them up on the centerstand,,, (after lifting the shock onto it's O rings) but as soon as I would take it off the stand,,, ? bike would drop,,, .. bike has a perelli rear tire,,, and that was rubbing... so couldn't drive the bike... . absolutely no spring action... what a mess..

the shocks are chrome in appearance,, have a black sticker that says "air shocks",, and have an expandable rubber ? dust boot at the bottom. bike is an 83 aspencade,,

With no air in the shocks, they will bottom out. The OEM springs will not lift the bike, they assist the air bladder.

yes they will and you need to rebuild them ...Honda spring were just to weak and had to have air ...not a bad idea its just dosnt work thirty yrs down the road at all ....they need rebuilt with the toughest springs progressive makes for them

If you are on a budget you could look for a set of 83 shocks.
They are able to ride with no air.

If you have the cash progresives are the way to go.

maybe this explanation will be better,,, the outer housing has slipped down over the two O rings,, their is absolutely no upward spring pressure whatsoever on either shock.. I can push the housing down like ? 4" ,, or completely down with no springs doing anything. Thanx everyone for try'n to help :help:

The '83 Standard and Interstate shocks can go without air pressure, but the Aspencade still needs 28-57 PSI, at least according to the manual...

BOTH sides?!?!? Holy MOLY! Definitely both sets of springs have broken....very strange, indeed...unless the dint have any springs to start with....which is even stranger.
If the circlip that holds the bottom spring seat had come loose, or for any other reason the lower spring seat had failed, the springs would be held in the air chamber by the guide bushing, seals, and snapring for the seal....I guess it's possible that the lower spring seat wore thru the seat, or the seats themselves failed.
That's the dangdest thing I ever seen....for BOTH sides to fail like that at the same time. You weren't goin Evel Knievel on us were ya? :headscratch:
