Otay...so I been lookin at the Shinkos....seems most of the reviews are complaints about the wear....they don't seem to last very long. And this was mostly on lighter rides than mine.
Plus....I'm havin a heck of a time finding ANY tire of the right size...130 90-17. I see them at 120, 140, and everything EXCEPT 130.....

Where are you looking?

230 Tour Master https://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14/72/963/6188/ITEM/Shinko-230-Tour-Master-Rear-Tire.aspx

712 (Much softer compound and rubber wears quicker) https://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/31/401/6205/ITEM/Shinko-712-Rear-Tire.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

I forgot to add, the last 712 I had on my bike I got about 7500 miles out of it last year, but I had the bike set up as a bobber. There is no way I will get 7500 miles out of this 712 that I have on the bike now and I would not suggest that it be put on a full dress bike.

I just saw the Shinkos on ansimp's rat's nest, and with 600 miles on them they still have the whiskers on them. I like the tread pattern.

~O~

... this posts is kinda lame, I pretty much duplicated what brian said.

I can get the Shinkos in the right size locally. I was referring to being able to find any other brand, such as a Michelin, or Dunlop.
As far as actual mileage, at this point I AM estimating, since I have changed the speedo at least 3 times since I've had the bike, and the one that is on it now, which happens to be the original one it had when I bought it, the odometer stopped working. The bike had 52,000 on it when I bought it. At the time I changed back to the speedo that's on it now, it had close to 80,000. But, no, I do not positively know the actual mileage I had added since I bought it in '08. I kept up with it for the first 2-3 years, until the odo quit, and it was under 10,000 per year...I do know that.
I guess I'll just have to accept that I will have to replace the rear tire every year.... :crying:

And to add insult to injury...I was looking at the front tire earlier.....that dang thing is cupping something awful!! Plenty o tread left, but it's like looking at the mountains....up/down/up/down.... :Awe: :crying:

So...I been researching....I wanna go with a tire with a higher load rating, since I think that's prolly a lot of why mine wear out so quick. The BS Spitfire, and the Shinko 230 has a 68 load rating(the Shinko 712 is even lower than that)..which is good for up to 690 pounds. That's not enough, in my opinion. So...I find this Metzeler in the right size, with a 74 load rating...good for up to 830 pounds....that oughta do it, eh? I haven't checked locally yet for this one, but Cheapcycleparts has them on sale for $182. I know a lot of the Hardly guys run these tires. Imma thinking real hard about pullin the trigger on one....might even get the front tire to match.
Opinions?

Well,.......... my wife thinks I am old and fat.....but that is just her opinion! :smilie_happy:

Not sure where you got the load rating at but I believe the shinko 230 has a 74 load rating, The best place is american tire depot if you decide to order them, as well they have the best price on the other brands.

This is what I see...and now I see it is a FRONT tire....even tho I keyed in REAR tire.... :Doh2:

Once again Gerry, I think our wives are related because my wife says the same about me...

Aramid belted huh! Aramid is tough stuff. It is a high density plastic product that is stronger than wire rope! It is used in high strength mooring lines for Navy ships!

Plus....I'm havin a heck of a time finding ANY tire of the right size...130 90-17. I see them at 120, 140, and everything EXCEPT 130. What other size would fit, and NOT rub, or be a problem? I know in the past, the tires I have bought were rated for a gross weight RIGHT AT or slightly under what my bike weighs....I think this has the most to do with the wear, but I can't seem to find anything with a higher weight rating in the size I friggin need.
I'm starting to wonder just how many miles I actually put on this turd every year....
I ride 80 miles per day(to/from work), every day, weather permitting. In the winter, I don't ride as much, naturally. 80 x 5 = 400 miles per week. If I rode every day all year, that's 20,800 miles per yr. Cut that in half, and it's still over 10,000 miles. I can usually ride from Feb/March, until around Nov., just depends on when, and how cold it gets, so I'm not riding every single day thru those months. And...it rains, too, so I don't ride on days that's it's rainin, or gunna be rainin....at least not on purpose.
Am I expecting TOO MUCH for a tire to last longer than what mine are lasting? I'm only familiar with automotive tires that last 30,000 or so, so I kinda expect my bike tires to last at least half of that...am I wrong to expect that?
I don't hot rod, or do twisties on the edge, rarely ever lock the rear up(only once, that I can remember). I just ride down the road....
As I said earlier...the original Dunlop that was on the rear when I bought the bike lasted 2 years, and I only replaced it because the tread was coming apart...but it did have plenty of tread left. They don't make that tire in my size anymore, or I'd get one...
:fiddle:
Here's the size you want.

The 712 has a load rating of 68(690 pounds), which is the same as what I have been buying. I wanna go with a higher load rating. The 230 apparently is rated at 74(830 lbs)....

I love my Metzlers on my CBRs but I pay at least 3 times the cost of the Shinko 230s and sure they see much higher speeds. At this stage I cannot speak more highly of a tire that has cost so little. Remember when you stake (ruin) a tire it will be a lot less painful when the price is lower. Load rating is not an issue on the front tire as seen on my Rats Nest. I am currently running 27psi in the front suspension and 58 in the rear so that tells you I am fairly well loaded up.

Not really worried about the load rating on the front tire...I get pretty good mileage outta those. Only two new fronts, compared to 5 rears since '08. :crying:
I'm still looking, and gathering data, but I might be leaning a little more towards the Shinko at the moment...

Joel, do your tires wear out the same each time (other than sticking nails and screws in them)? I am trying to figure out what could be different that my tires last longer being the same brand, and should be the same weight on the bike and similar riding styles. I would like to try to help get to the bottom of this for other guys too. It gets expensive when we keep changing tires that should otherwise last twice as long? :headscratch:
