Sup guys i just picked up an 84 aspencade to add to my collection. I bought this bike for my dad 12 years ago for Father's Day. He just bought it back and gave it to me! I started diggin the old wings and mentioned that maybe i would enjoy a full dressed wing for two up touring, which I've never done. I've always trailered. I got home today and TH bike was in my garage with a big bow in it. Gotta love it.

Anyway, the bike seems to have a lot of heat pouring put onto my Legs from behind the fairing. The coolant bottle was dry after a long ride. Ima add some to it, i figure thats the problem. Question is, is there a noticeable amount of heat that comes from behind the fairing on these? This is my first bike with a fairing and its WAY hotter on my legs than my air cooled harley or Suzuki ever was.

Make sure there is coolant in the engine, I always get concerned when the overflow bottle is empty!
 
yes most know my answer here is ... ck for leaks ...ck to see if fan comes on when it idles for awhile .. couldf be something simple like fan and just steaming off ... many things to look at ... personally i dont use thermostats at ..i like full flow all the time ....1200 radiators are actually smaller than 1000 or 1100 radiators ...my 1200 mod bikes dont have tham as i domt like the fact there smaller ...give it a good go over
 
Everything said above, and yes on the heat from the engine on the legs. Normal deal. Just make sure the engine is running proper temp. my aspy normally runs about midways on temp bars on LCD dash. It will heat up to about two/three bars from temp redline, then the fan cools it right back off.

How would u go about by passing the thermo switch for full all time flow?
 
I use an override switch atm for my thermo fan. Hardly ever use it except when in heavy traffic and then I need to remember to turn it off. The fan would be one of the largest current draws on the standard GWs.

My 85 pushes warm on my legs.. .. but I also have the inside filler pieces on the fairing lowers inside of at the moment..congrats

I understand that there will be some warm air from the motor. This was uncomfortably hot though.
 
For comparison purposes, here is my 1100 alongside a friends 1200. You will notice that my 1100 with the Vetter faring has the lowers removed under the faring. That is the way I rode it during the summer because the heat being thrown down from the lowers roasted my feet!

I took the '85 1200 for a spin (smooth....sweet bike) and enjoyed everything about it EXCEPT...it really roasted my feet!! :shock:

the way the hooch bike is set up witch is 1200 in 1000 bike the upper radiator hose down by the motor is loosen from the motor cover and hose inside is the thermostrat and its removed ...this is not that easy to to do as the dress bike has heat shield there also ..i dont like those things either and the heat shield is removed too ...this allowe the air flow to move along and get gone ...and makes less heat ....now most dont do this and there is plenty of reasons to keep as is ...but not me this time of year seems full flow runs cooler and is more consistant to me ....

i would not run this bike much till you get this cooling system working good ...
 
There's two wires that go to the plug at the thermal switch, I think one is black and the other green. The thermal switch is a normally open and when the coolant temp reaches between 206 to 218 degrees the switch closes and completes the ground for the fan to turn on. The fan gets it's hot feed when the ignition switch is turned on. Somewhere along the two wires to the switch, you can tie in one wire on each and run to a toggle switch up on your fairing so you can manually complete the ground to turn the fan off and on. If your thermal switch is working correctly, you don't need it, but if the thermal switch quits working it sure is handy to have on a hot blistering day in the traffic.

What he said if you want to always run you Vann tire these two wires together abd the fan will ruin when bike is turned on. Did this on my 1100..

What is the temp gauge doing? These old girls put out a lot of heat this time of year.

The temp gage was running about 1 or 2 bars into the "hot zone" on the display. We caught a little rain on the way home and the temp dropped outside and the bar was right at the top of the "cool zone" (4 bars) and the difference in the heat was significant. I am going to stop and grab some coolant on my way home from work because I know it is low. I just cant believe this bike ran that hot and my ol man never complained about it. He rented a harley and talked about how hot it was but this is seriously the hottest bike I have ever ridden. All my bikes have been air cooled, no fairings though.

You guys have any reccomendations on what coolant to use? I know it has to be silica free for the aluminum engines. Also, do you just fill it in the bottle in the glove box area? Should I fill it to the top level in the bottle with the bike cold?

Thanks for all your help guys. I love this community! I willl get some pics up of the "fleet" soon. I think Im gonna have to unload my '76. I cant seem to get her to run right. Now I have the 84 and the 75 to play with and both run great.
 
fill it cold in radiator and tank too and i think your right something not right ... i have no recommendations on antifreeze brand or type ..my only deal is id find out whats wrong first before antifreeze was put in ...water is much cheaper til you can figure whats wrong
 
That's too hot.
Low on coolant could be why.
Fill it at the radiator then fill the recovery tank.

Question now is, where did the coolant go.
I would top it up cold then run it at home til good and warm.
Check around carefully for any leaks.
While running, look at the recovery tank for any signs of bubbles.
That would indicate a blown head gasket.
 
Do I have to remove any tupperware to fill the radiator up? I have not looked for the actual radiator cap. Is it easily accessable? When filling the recovery bottle with the engine cold, should i fill it to the "full" mark or will that be too much when the engine warms up?
 
Radiator was full to the top. I filled the recovery bottle and the bike is running now. We shall see

This seems to be where the bike wants to run. It gets up to this point then cools itself. Tanks are full and the fan kicks on as normal. Is this just how these things are? Bike is so darn hot on my legs I dont think I can stand to ride it, really sucks since it was a gift from my dad. Do people take the lowers off in the summer? Its about 83 degrees out atm and the bike was front end in the garage with no fan on it. Seems like it should cool itself before it toasts ur nutz :heat:
