I like customizing that does not cost anything.

I thought my naked '82 might look better with the tail piece of the muffler shortened up but I didn't want it shortened right back to the muffler. So I cut it off at about 2" out from the muffler. To get a finished look to the end, I cut the belled end off the piece I cut off, cut a slot in it so it would squeeze down small enough to go into the end of the tail pipe. Had to cut out about 3/8" slot. To squeeze it together I used a hose clamp to get it into the end of the tail pipe and then tapped it in with a piece of wood.

How do you like the sound without the baffle in?

It is a bit louder but a deep tone so it sounds good to my ear. Not raspy or obnoxious just a bit louder.

You are really aware that it is louder to when I'm riding the bike so might become tiresome on a long ride. I don't know how it would sound to someone as I ride by.

Funny thing is that without my ear plugs in the idle sounds nice and even but with ear plugs in it sounds very uneven and rough.

Here is a video of the bike idling. The baffles have been taken out but the tail pipes have not been shortened.

Agree, looks very nice.Funny how simple & small changes are sometimes very pleasing to the eye.How do you like the carb swap?

The single carb is a big improvement over OEM but a lot of work and fiddling to install. But, when sorted it is a very simple, trouble free system. There is a whole section on single carb builds with lots of knowledgeable people who helped me through it.

Any chance you might have a pic of the stock baffle and any packing that was used in the stock pipe?
No I garbaged it as soon as I took it out. Never thought to take a picture. I can tell you that it was a 3/4" - 1" ID tube full of small holes and wrapped in fiberglass insulation.

I was looking for a piece of metal in the junk box and found one of the baffles I took out.

OK I shortened my tailpipe back in August and have been riding it like that till now. Without the baffles it is a bit louder than stock and really cool at first but I find that is sort of gets on my nerves now. :Awe:

Of the two baffles I managed to save one of them which is in decent condition. So I cut the flare end off (it no longer fits into the tailpipe now anyway) and then cut then cut it in half. Made a couple of aluminum doughnuts using a 1" and 2" hole saws and then JB welded the doughnuts onto the ends of the shortened baffles. Then I wrapped the these with pink fiberglass insulation and wrapped steel wire around to hold it together. Stuffed the whole thing back into the tail pipe. :builder:

Sorry I didn't think to take a picture of the insulation wrapped around a baffle.

Way quieter now, almost like before. Not sure how long it will last but like it for now. :moped:
