Just wondering if a thick Coleman style bag rolled up would be too big or just right for back support on long trips. I was thinking of the newer ones too but they have such fluffy fill , not sure they would work.

I've used the old ones as a super nice firm pillow. If far enough forward on the rear of the seat it should be great.

On my last long trip I strapped on my small suitcase to the passenger seat. That helped for back support and to help keep me from crouching over. At times it felt too confining restricting me from stretching out but rest stops helped.
Planning a long ride somewhere Jeff?

Not really but I have a hard time even on 40 mile trips, after surgery the muscles in my back arent what they were, I need some support but don't want to bolt anything on that interferes with my legs and cant really afford a seat with an integrated backrest, seems something behind me would be the best alternative.
Thanks Slab,Dan.

Know what you mean, I don't like backrest for the same reason.
I have a bolt on backrest you can try if you like.
Sure, I would like to see it, you never know what will work till you try it..just didn't want buy something on line and find it didnt work for me. I had the Markland flip up style, I didn't care for the mounting, adjustment and it rubbed my legs when stopped at lights.
This weekend maybe?

I started with a back rest that clips onto the rails that mount to the frame tubes under the seat.

The back rest portion was small.

I stumbled unto a larger one that I made work. I like the set-up I have now.

Hmmmm..might depend on who ya had rolled up in it....

:hihihi:

If you have trouble swinging your leg over a backrest, a rolled up bag might be worse, since it is likely to be taller, even rolled up. Just guessing. I also have a Markland flip forward backrest, and it does make swinging my leg over a bit more challenging than without it, but I'm so used to having it now that it hurts my back to NOT have it. I understand back & leg problems that make riding more challenging, and dread the day I know is coming when I will have those issues...
Perhaps someone should invent an airbag backrest that will inflate/deflate at the push of a button. Deflated, it would be out of the way, plus it could be inflated to where if feels best for individual riders. Just tinkin out loud here at lunch time.... :headscratch:

Remember...ya'll heard this idea first HERE, so if ya see something like this in the near future, they stole my idea..... :smilie_happy:

OK, that one I have already tried, There is one that adjusts on rails that bolt to the front engine mount and back to the rack mount bolts, looks like less sharp edges but don't really know how much it sticks out on the legs.
I like that seat McGovern..Thats what I would like to find when I have the extra dough, but when I have it there are none around and they always show up when I don't.
AApple, I like the way you think..I was thinking a seat hinged in the middle so you could lift padding up when there isn't a passenger, only a partial center section rear would come up leaving the sides of the seat and rear bolts intact to secure the seat.{Think rear seat armrest that folds into the seat}
Patent pending

I noticed you crouch over sometimes when you ride.

~O~

I had a backrest on my 750A that mounted to the rear rack on a slide. Loosen two knobs, slide it forward/rearward, for one or two person riding. Maybe something like that would work for ya?

I should also add that my backrest is not only adjustable up and down, but also forward and backward. It also pulls right out of the seat if I need to make room and remove it.

I believe it is a Utopia backrest. They can still be purchased and installed (although pricey at $199).

Glad I have one!

Is that 199 for the whole seat or is the backrest fitted into a customers seat, would be something to consider when my boat comes in.

The Utopia's are a bit on the pricy side, but they do have the right name. My old man has one on his Helix and I swear I feel like I am in a recliner when I lean into it.

Jeff, it is my understanding that it is just for the backrest and the mounting kit.

I will have to look and see where I got mine. It may not be from Utopia. I know I only paid $75 for mine, but it was only for the backrest and the support bar in the back. It did not come with the kit for seat installation, but did come with the pouch attached to the back and a cover for the extension.

OK, I just looked into Utopia and it is 199, I didn't know integrated backrest were available as a kit, thought you had to buy a complete seat..Thanks for the info..I`ll do some searching and see if there are available alternatives to Utopia.
