Guys I have a bottle taking up space, I have to get rid of it sometime so was thinking of using it in the rear end but didn't want to add something that will give me trouble. I remember this stuff was marketed years ago , maybe isn't a miracle oil but so long as it lubricates and doesn't cause trouble.
Anyone else use this stuff, was concerned with its graphite additives making trouble somehow , just being careful.
Thanks.

Thanks Dan, I cant think of any reason either..wasn't sure if there were some type of limited slip on these goldwings..from what I see it is a direct type drive.

What is the weight of it? Should be at least 90w equal to gear oil. Many, many moons ago, I tried Slick 50 in my '86 Suburu. Lasted well past 154,000 miles before I sold the car and was convinced the Slick 50 helped. That is, until I met other Suburu Owners that had GL's that ran well past 200,000 miles and they often went long times between oil changes!

Boy did I feel like the snake oil guy got me! :whip: :rtfm:

Let us know if the mpg improves. It just might.
Mileage will improve if you smear some on the throttle grip :smilie_happy:

Extracted from https://skepdic.com/slick50.html.

"PTFE is a solid which is added to engine oil and coats the moving parts of the engine.

The basic ingredient is the same in most of these additives: 50 weight engine oil with standard additives. The magic ingredient in Liquid Ring, Matrix, QM1 and T-Plus from K-Mart is Polytetrafluoroethylene. Don't try to pronounce it: call it PTFE. But don't call it Teflon, which is what it is, because that is a registered trademark. Dupont, who invented Teflon, claims that Teflon is not useful as an ingredient in oil additives or oils used for internal combustion engines." According to the Slick 50 website, Slick 50® Supercharged Synthetic Engine Treatment no longer contains PTFE. Slick 50® Recharged High Mileage Engine Treatment contains a small amount of PTFE. [/new]

In defense of those additives that still use PTFE, tests done on a Chevy 6 cylinder engine by the University of Utah Engineering Experiment Station found that after treatment with the PTFE additive the test engine's friction was reduced by 13.1 percent, the output horsepower increased from 5.3 percent to 8.1 percent, and fuel economy improved as well. Unfortunately, the same tests concluded that "There was a pressure drop across the oil filter resulting from possible clogging of small passageways." Oil analysis showed that iron contamination doubled after the treatment, indicating that engine wear increased."

I vote with Joe. my choice would be to recycle that stuff and use gear lube in the rear end.

Geesh..It was such an easy decision before , as an engine treatment I have no faith in it but wondering if in a cooler more simple environment like a rear end it might work better..now I have to reconsider.

I remember years ago when this stuff hit the market, we tried some in over the road trucks for one of our customers. Results were inconclusive, oil analysis done by Chevron in Richmond CA referred to it as snake oil, however the oil analysis reports did not show any change in metal contamination compared to trucks not using it.
So to me it was expensive with no real benefits. I never used it in anything I own.

I'm on the fence, my cynical skeptical side says it's worthless snake oil. My curious side says, I hope so, maybe.

There are many out there like Duralube, Slick 50, STP, Lucas, Redline, Seafoam, the list goes on and on.

There used to be a very convincing infomercial on where there had an engine on a stand brought it up to temperature and added their miracle product.
They would zoom on the temp and oil pressure gauges, finally they pulled the oil drain plug and out came the oil. The engine continued run well didn't seize and the temp didn't increase even with no oil or oil pressure.

Can't remember the name of the product but it was interesting.

Slick 50 used to do that. I attended a demonstration at a Ford club back in 1985 where the salesman had an open Briggs and Stratten lawn mower engine with no oil that had been treated with Slick 50. He started the engine and let it run during the entire presentation to prove how effective the product was at lubricating the engine.

Well guys I just went with 80-90 GL5 regular edition..may have been fine to use the slick 50 just went with what I knew rather then chance it , maybe use it on a tiller gear box or something I care less about.

I have seen those demonstrations Gerry and you never see them run another engine beside it that has only had regular oil in it. They used to have engine blows at the VW shows were they would run an old engine at full noise until destruction with no oil in them. They stopped using stock engines and went to high performance ones as some of the stock ones were still running (sort of) after more than 30 mins.
