Hello everyone, the speedometer on my '78 doesn't work, I've changed out the cable and gauges so my next step was the drive unit on the wheel. When I dropped the front tire and rolled it, the drive unit was spinning like it is supposed to. I remounted the wheel to the forks and the unit doesn't spin. Obviously something is bound up, any clues what to check first?

hmmmmm ease off axcle tighting till speedo work ..as a way to see up ...it dosnt have to super tight here ... just play takenn out when fork are thighten it holds everything ...best i can offer as advice ....

You could also loosen the cable off the speedo and see if the inner spins when you rotate the front wheel.( I use the center stand and a jack stand under the engine forcing the back wheel down and the front wheel up, the same way I support the bike to remove the front wheel)

I believe that unit has to "mesh" to the wheel. Loosen everything and make sure all is together correctly then slowly start to tighten the axle while spinning the wheel to ensure that everything is still working. I would have the end that connects to the speedo in my hand so I could ensure that the drive is actually turning. If it still does not work you should replace the drive unit itself as it may be broken. It would still turn until you put it under a load.

I don't know if yours has the plastic gear in the drive but 1100 does.
They can get stripped and spin sometimes then other times not.
If I remember, the cable can be pulled out of the jacket while it's still connected to the speedo. Can stick it in the drive unit and spin the wheel, see if the cable spins good.

I have another unit to replace this one with, it just threw me off when to other worked when not attached to the forks.
