New to OldWing owners often have one question in mind when they join the community, "what do I need to check first?" In every response many things are mentioned and only one item is never left out, "change the timing belts." The stator wiring is rarely mentioned. Why?

Over the years I know that the three yellow wires were considered important and then after some confusing(to me at least) stator threads the three yellow wire conversion has dropped off the map.

With the labor intensive and higher mechanical skills curve required to replace the stator shouldn't this be mentioned in EVERY new owner check list response? Because at the moment it isn't.

Yes or no, will a short between these wires while running ruin the stator? If the answer is yes then why isn't this mod first or second only after belts on the list. This has never been answered to my satisfaction or it wouldn't be the first thing I think of when one of these new owner questions hits the boards.

we should just make a list randy of all the things to look at ...not be over worded just a list then have put somewhere where it can be found easy ...the list is quite big really and hard to remember on the spot and many things get not mention ....

It is the first thing I would look at if I was considering a new to be bike so that I would know what to look at next. I still believe that the best defense against heat build-up at that connector is to get rid of the connector all together.

A short yellow to yellow and probably yellow to ground would certainly burn out the stator.
It all depends on the heat generated, if it was enough to damage the insulation around the windings.

It should be listed as a first check the same as replacing timing belts. My opinion, I do not agree that it should be automatic to cut the three wires and solder them per se. I agree the connector needs to be checked/and or replaced, but I am in favor of replacing the connector rather than soldering the wires.

After pulling my engine several times, I think a good working connector is the better way to go.

+1 :good:

well the stator is a mess wires go 3" then there spliced at plug in stator cover ...then goes 6" and a connector is used ... on 1000 one stator wire goes to a crimped connection under the wiring harnest and Y off there goes to reg and retifier...other 2 go rectifier...hmmmm i say to many breaks period in my view ...taking the motor out now for the endless and brainless wiring they used ...the wires should go to where they go ..unplug there to take motor out is my view on it

I thought that was in the New 2 U bike thread, but I didn't see it, should it be added?
I haven't looked but if it isn't there it should be!

No mention of the stator wires in Roady's thread that I saw, in fact no mention of them in any of the Tips and Tricks forum stickied topics either.

Any volunteers to make one up?

Does a short while running ruin the stator every time?

Well here is my two cents. I had the plug short out and burn the plug. I was about 12 miles from home. Fixed the plug stator was fine but I think I cooked the thinngy that mounts to the false tank.. That is what I replaced along with the 7v thinngy for the gauges :head bang:

Good thing you replaced your "thingies" as they are always a problem! :smilie_happy:
