I don't think this problem has anything to do with that speedo wiring by looking at the diagram.

Ok,
Take a look at the picture below.
The red arrows point to the brown wire which powers the tailight running bulbs.

The blue circle shows where there's a factory splice, at that point the color changes from solid brown to brown/striped.
The brown going the other direction is coming from the park light fuse, that works.

IF this wire diagram is correct this means the only possible cause for your not working with key on is a bad connection at that splice, leading to the ignition switch, the switch itself, or power TO the switch.
Checking that brown/striped for power will help narrow down the problem.
Could be no power on the brown/striped FEEDING the tailight BEFORE the switch also.

If you can print this or take a laptop out and set it on a chair or stool so it is right there to follow word for word that is the thing to do. (me tinks) :laptop: :music3:

Get your "Rolling eyes" emoticons ready. I've decided to put 2 strips of small white LED lights on the inside of the lens, these will be more than brite enough to illuminate the tail light and license plate. I'll just run them to the fuse block.

I just need my bike and can't afford a ticket right now. Thanks for all the help guys.

Nice!
Does it block light from the brake light though?

Got a pic?

I'll post pics after dark tonight, I can see it in the daylight(cloudy) but I can tell the LED doesn't even come close to washing out the brake light. I'm happy with it.

OK...this sucks. I feel I need to admit to something I did to my bike before got really serious about putting her back together from almost nothing, back when I wasn't even sure I was going to keep her. When I replaced the burned out husk of a speedometer I cut the wire bundle coming out of the back of it. :head bang: I know! That was the signal cancel, and some other stuff, but the one from the wrecking yard didn't have this bundle in the back. I couldn't figure out how to get the old one off, with the fairing and all... I can't find the end of this bundle of wires. I can't remember much about what I did, seem to remember finding a plug somewhere with the cut bundle, and removing it but not sure about that, so this cut bundle might be floating around somewhere in the front of the frame or something...maybe the reason that fuse blew? I'm kinda sure the running taillight worked after this but, I can't really be sure of anything anymore.

So there it is...right now I care more about my bike than my pride.
