Hey all,
First time to post on this forum but have been perusing for a while now. Seems like a great bunch of people, much like another wing forum I frequent.
Never thought I'd be looking at another 78 GL1000 in my garage when I basically "gave" away my first one in 1987. But here she is. Another 78 model, with new carbs, 55K miles, all the original parts are there and it runs well. Bike is in great condition and best of all, over the years, the previous owner/s refrained from using any of the frequently seen "Southern Engineering" techniques of this period. Not sure where this project will end up as I'm torn between putting everything back to stock or dressing it. I have the color matched fairing lowers, a Vetter trunk box and a 78 Cycle Sound unit.
Right now I'm leaning towards stock...just as it came out of the crate from Honda. They just seem a little more "classic" and unique when naked. Either way, I've got the pieces to do either. Hmmm.....

So, what does it need? Basically some TLC. Some of the parts like the battery box, shelter box, air box and cover have some rodent damage from urine. Those will be removed, beadblasted and powdercoated back to new condition. Other hardware that look a little worn will be replaced or refurbished. I'd like to put a stock seat back on it too, but I remember how uncomfortable that was.

Not planning on taking this down to the frame but who knows, its a long winter. For now, the forks need new seals, new tires and tubes and rebuild the brakes. For now, not much more than that other than ride her...

Welcome to the CGW Forums, jhughes556!!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
Looks great just the way it is...not really "formal" dress, but casual dress! It would be sweet either way. :good:

i think the bike looks great the way it is. welcome from waco, texas. i dressed my 75 wing and would not change it back for anything. to each his own. anyway welcome and glad to have ya.

Aaaaa, welcome from Kansas City, first, your bike looks terrific just the way it is however, ask yourself what type of riding your going to be doing, just around the city riding or a lot of long haul riding? Long haul you want the protection of the fairing and in the city, I'd go naked, I'm from San Antonio by the way, just live in KC now..Welcome again... :salute:

Thanks for the kind words from everyone. Took the time today to strip off the fairing, bags, support brackets, pod support shelter, and battery box. More to come off tomorrow and those to the powder coaters on Monday. The more I took off, the more I liked it. I'm leaning more towards the nekked look now and using this GW for in town riding. I also have an '08 1800 that I get my long haul fix from.

Welcome from New Jersey! :clapping:
I agree, if you have an 1800...than go nekkid! Can always add just a Plexifaring III for a windshield alone!

Welcome!

So you took off the bags. Selling them by any chance? I am looking for Vetter bags and trunk.
Do you have trunk too?

Yes, I have the entire suite including the trunk and the lowers and the cyclesound (with 8 track!). I'm going to restore these also just to have if I decide to put the touring package back on. But thanks for asking. I'm amazed the stuff you can still find! One thing that seems to be hard to find is the original headlight hardware. So many of them were removed to install the Vetter fairing and the takeoffs were disposed of. Probably many laying around in a garage/attics with owners thinking "where did this come from". I know the parts are still available from Mother Honda but they are sure proud of them.
