Hello folks, I am always thinking, always trying to do things different than most, my friend told me how to check the timing using the left pulley and paint marks, but as much as I like my friend he told me wrong, Well, let me explain,, he told me to mark the t-1 mark then mark the t1 on the pulley when you think about it that's not right, it should be the f-1 mark at idle and it should line up with the t-1 mark on the case.. just like when your reading it in the hole..So here's what I did, I first found that it was kinda hard to see the marks from the pulley to the side case so I changed it, I made a custom cut piece of wood [1/2" ply] and nailed it to a 4x4 and made a stand, I put the t-1 mark on it after lining it up thru the site glass, then I moved the crank to the f-1 and f-2 marks and made my paint marks on the pulley, the t-1 is that same thing as the crosshair mark in your site glass, now while it's at a idle the f-1 mark should line up with the t-1 on your wood, here are some photo's to show you how I did it and you can see the marks with ease now..View attachment 2View attachment 1 Yes, i don't see why a striaght piece of wood wouldn't work, when you throttle up the mark should raise up..if it doesn't the vacuum advance is probably not working.. Just another way to check your timing.. or you can do it the other way. I was able to read the marks and throttle it by hand at the carbs at the same time and you can see the marks raise up..

Here's a video. Not the best I know but you can see it work.. Now that's a f-1 paint mark on the pulley and the mark on the wood is T-1..

Happy day's :smilie_happy: It's hard holding a camera and a timing light at the same time.. Sorry about the quality of the video..

Clever beav!

Have you been able to figure where the mark should be at full advance, whatever the spec says that should be?
No sir I need help on that. but you can sure see the marks this way with ease..I rolled the crank around and looked for the staight line on it but I did not see it..so I don't know..Is the 81 different..I sure would like to figure that out..For me it's baby steps..I know the mark raises so I'm not that concerned because I know it's advancing..I'm supposed to get a site glass shortly and i will have a look at that line I can't seem to find..cool..

Nah that's OK beav, I don't think the problem Joe mentioned happens to everyone.

The way we usually post videos is upload them to youtube then by using the youtube code we can display a player
in the post much like the one you see earlier in your post.
I have been trying for some time to make videos uploaded directly to the forum play properly for everyone
so we don't have to rely on youtube but for the time being it looks like youtube is the best option.

I've had success with converting videos to the .flv format then uploading them to the server,
that seems to be the only other stable way to display videos.
scdmarx has done it too using a file hosting site. Maybe he will chime in here how he does it.

For now, I'll see if I can convert your video to a flv and re link to it.

Joe, I removed the video so this would not happen to anyone else..I never take chances like that and I don't understand that if it worked ok before, why would this happen now..I will not add these video's anymore only photo's...I'm working on those degree's and the max advance Dan..[38.5 degree's max]..I'll figure it out..I hate the idea you have to drop out a quart of oil to see the site marks, that's bs, I'll do it just to get my advance marks though.. I also made my own site hole cap using three peices of lexan cut out with a holesaw and a drill press, I glued the sides then wrapped with duct tape and fitted it in the hole, no oil leaked and I could see the oil in there. tommorrow I plan to take the quart out and try looking again..sorry about the video problem Joe, I removed all of them..

If I remember correctly...when the crank is lined up right, the keyway on the crank pulley is straight up. Let me run out to my '81 engine and look.

Forgot...with my timing belts and heads off, the engine spins too freely to get the nut off the crank pully! There is a timing mark straight up behind the crank pulley on the block though.

Ok, vid is done up as a .flv
Let me know if there is any prollem with it.
I think I figured out how to get the degree's I'm after on the wood stand , I made my own degree wheel, I used some of my old drafting skills I learned in grade school and some of my carpenter skills using a speed square and a bevel, got the 38.5 degree mark for my wood stand..Now if it matches with the mark on the crank thru the site glass I did it correctly..I can't wait to check myself..ha ha..Cool..I didn't even know they made degree wheels.. :smilie_happy: I'm so stupid

Is anyone having any luck using a site glass, all I'm getting is oil and can't see the marks, I took out a quart of oil, should I remove more?

I just thought of something that will work for reading your timing without to much hassel, remove the left cover and replace it with another cover [off ebay] with a window cut out custom for you to shoot your laser light in to see your marks just transfer the t-1 to the case in the same manner..Cool huh.. Joe I'm trying to advance or retard the timing with the side bolt.. I want to see what it does.. Sorry about the video, by the time Dan said he fixed the problem I all ready deleted it, I had no idea it could do that, and I removed the other's for that same reason.. hope I didn't blow up your computer.. :smilie_happy:

Have a look at the site glass made for this.

The big difference in this thing is it's deeper than the one I made from an old oil fill cap.
With this window and a dab of white paint on the timing marks should make them easier to see.
I'll order one if I can find it cheap then I'd be willing to loan it out to members here.

I never give up on something like this, I can see the mark but just a little, I can see the oil covering the crank..My friend has one he said I can have but he said they were useless, I also read that red nail polish might make it easier to see, I'm not getting any oil splash I just can't see the marks, I'm trying the nail polish next and then white paint if that don't work..Thank's

Maybe red would work better, never tried it.
I use a white paint pen.
Give the marks a shot of carb cleaner on a rag to wipe the oil off first.
Yes, I thought I'd try both and see which one I can see better..I will get my qu tips out and clean up the area well first, then apply and maybe blowdry or use a light..
