when i purchased my 1985 1200 the tire on the back was a 190 40 15 the manual says it takes a 190 50 15 what difference does this make in handling or the drive gear ratio

not sure but I think the -50- is the percentage of sidewall. Which affects the outside circumference. Larger will give you modestly lower rpm at any given speed.
