Hello from NC
Just got a 1981 GL1100 Goldwing and need lil assistance. Found site yesterday and with the post here have determined I gotta replace stator.

Now this morning I leave to ride bike to work (10 miles) turn in at store to get drink, and had no gears. Fortunately just down the road from my house. Can go thru the gears but it doesn't move. Dont hear any unusual noises. Can go to neutral and thru all gears and no strange noise. As I turned into store I noticed a slight noise like the kickstand popped into place??? Any ideas, being I gotta pull motor already to replace stator at some point??

Welcome to Classic!

How many miles on the bike? I am thinking drive shaft rather than the transmission. Put the bike on the center stand and the transmission in 1st gear. Try to turn the rear tire. Does it turn freely? You might then want to pull the rear wheel and final drive and see if the shaft will slide out of the swing arm housing - it should not come out if things are working correctly.

109k-- When in gear I can push the bike. I try that as soon as I can and post results.

So maybe just one of the dreaded "C" clips I keep reading about up here. Can you buy them at automotive stores or where?

I hope that is all the problem is, was holding off on stator replacement because of the distance I ride right now. Plan to break it all down this winter. Thanks for all the info, love this site!

It is a 20MM Outer Circlip that can be bought at any auto parts store.

Is it the one at the front near motor inside rubber boot that I keep reading how tough it is to remove and put back?

Yes... the front of the drive shaft, rear of the motor output shaft, under the boot. A very good pair of snap ring pliers is suggested/needed to get the job done with as little frustration as possible.

Not sure what you are refering to as a 3/4 but it is similar to this one:
