Here's one for the books. 1999 ford ranger 4.0 engine. Overdrive switch didn't work I though switch on gearshift selector was bad. I got a used one 25.00. While taking panels off to get access to wiring I though I would check switch one last time before pulling wires through column. Switch worked just fine. I had been on ranger forms last night and someone said check backup lights to see if they worked. They didn't. Checked fuse and it was bad. Changed fuse then checked overdrive switch it worked just as it should. Seems back up lights and overdrive switch shared same fuse. And all was well. And now I have a spare gearshift selector. Well it could have been much worst. Jerry.
I think we are going to see more of this with shared circuits. The issue I see is, how many mechanics are trained to go through the diagnostic process as opposed to relying on the codes alone. In my case, replacing the TRS per the code would not have solved the issue. I am not knocking mechanics at all, just observing how my vehicles have been handled in the past at many shops. Code shows up, all parts related to the code are replaced. Often, the root cause as to why the part failed is not looked into.
 
Or more to the point Gerry, why it flags that code fault. Great to hear that the little car is all good and passed everything :good:
 
My problem was last September and all is still good I still have backup lights and working overdrive switch. Don't know why the fuse blew in the first place. Jerry

You hit the nail right square on da head, Gerry. Most gen techs these days don't know their butt from a hole in the ground. Finding, and correcting the original cause of failure is not something they look for. They're looking for the quick fix to get the thing out the door, and the cash on the barrel head. I tell these guys, when they keep putting fuses in the blow instantly, "Just put in a 30 amp fuse, and follow the smoke....". :hihihi: You'd be surprised at how many actually DO it. :Doh2:
