- 1981 GL1100 Innerstate("The Turd")SOLD!!, 1996 GL1500 Innerstate
Well...it originally was just gunna be a "take the good parts out of the "new" switch and stick them in the old switch", but...this is ME we're talkin about, and ya'll KNOW...anytime I get involved, it's gunna turn into a friggin nightmare!
:smilie_happy:
So....the new-to-me turn signal switch is, of course, different from my original. It appears to have come from a later model, or possibly an Aspy, since it has the self cancelling feature, something that my Innerstate don't have. Of course, none of the parts will interchange, as far as the switch gear, so now I have to change the entire switch out....which means pulling the fairing  , the gauge pod  , air line connection   , choke cable  , and the weight from the front forks.
Luckily for me, the "new" switch only has one extra wire, along with a separate, 2 wire harness for the self cancel solenoid. After fighting with it a while, I eventually get the old switch off, after drawing myself a diagram of all of the wires, and plugs, and making sure the "new" switch has the same colors wires and connectors. 2 hours later, the new switch is in. I try it out before putting everything back together, annnnnd.....it don't werk. It does light up the lamps on the gauge cluster, but not the rear lights, nor does it blink. So I figure, it must need the fairing plugged in to work properly. Now I set the fairing back on, and snug down one of the bolts for it, plug the harness in, and test again. NUTTIN! The lamps on the gauge don't even light up now! SON-of-a- :sensored: .
Off comes the fairing again, and the weight. Double-check all of the connections, and all appear to be correct. About an hour has now passed, and there's a strange voice in me head...and I hear the voice say "Check the fuse, dummass". Yup...fuse blown. Replace the fuse, plug the fairing back in, and test again.....SUCCESS!! :yahoo:
Takes me aboot another hour to get it all back together, since I have to put stuff on, and take it right back off because I forgot the put the air line back on, or this or that. Then I decide I wanna change the speedo out....again. Then....I wanna put a bulb in the Tach, then this and that. FINALY get everything done I felt like doing today, and....the turn signals STILL work! :smilie_happy:
Story o me life...what should have been a 30 minute task turns into an all day cuss-fest. OH....while I was at it, I wanted to check full time 12v for my stereo memory, since it has stopped storing my pre-sets and clock. Get my multi-meter out, black to ground, red to the wire for radio memory, and...the smoke comes out! Whut?!?? Then I notice the leads on my multimeter are still on the AMP plugs.....dadgummit! Arrrrgh!
That's when I said, "That's enough, Pig...that's enough".....
Put me tools up, wiped the bike down, and came inside...... :ahem:
Habby Berfday, my butt.... :head bang:
