My turn signals were working intermttantly. Sometimes they'd feel like working and sometimes not. Sometimes they'd work for a minute, then decide on their own to quit. Sometimes they'd work fine during my preflight walk around, but not anymore by the time I got to the first corner. I bought a new flasher. Honda calls it a relay and they are quite proud of it. But that took care of the intermittant problem. Now I can trust my turn signals to work everytime I turn them on, left or right. The little bit of left over problem I still got is that they cancel too early. Like when getting off the freeway I might have to turn the signal on 3 times before I'm finished exiting. What causes this? Any ideas?

Mine always cancel ontime! (Well, to be fair, they were from the '81 and they were not self cancelling, I have to do it manually :smilie_happy: )

There are 3 pieces to the self cancel puzzle.

Speed sensor
Angle sensor
Turn sensor

If anyone of these detects a change, from that point forward after a certain timed interval a coil in the signal switch gets sent a shot of power to let the switch back to neutral.

also the clutch lever.
if you have the clutch in and ease it out to creape ahead the signal will cancel.
I was thinking of unhooking a couple of these sensors.. to make a happy medium for myself.

It must be the movement of the bike being sensed probably by the speedo.
Hmm, a little more to it than I thought. This speed sensor - is inside the speedometer? - is it servicable or does it require a new speedometer?
The turn sensor you mention, is that the part the manual is calling the control unit? And I'm assuming this unit would require an input from the speed and/or angle sensor to respond.
I would love to find something in print on the theory of operation for the turn signal system. My guess is it ain't gonna happen.

I have no idea how it works but I'm thankful mine doesn't. I'd rather cancel them when I'm ready. I never liked the self cancel in cars either.

I do agree the self cancel is at times an annoyance but having it is better than not IMO.

Movement of the bike is a sensor in the speedo, turn sensor is in the base of the triple tree, angle sensor is in the control unit.

I'm not sure which part depends on which other part to operate but I know if I have the signal on and I lean into a lane change they will cancel about 5 seconds after, which I think is ideal.
If signals are on and I speed up or slow down they will cancel after about 5 seconds. This is the cancel that usually gets annoying.
If I make a right or left turn on the street, same thing about 5 seconds later they turn off.
I've never tried leaning or turning at a standstill to see if they turn off but I will next time.

Edit: I went out and tried leaning and turning the steering but they didn't cancel so the system depends on the speed sensor also which tells me if there's a problem with the speed sensor then they won't cancel.

As crazy as it sounds, when I converted the front signals to LED my self canceling quit canceling. The rears are normal bulbs.
I cant explain why,just does.

mine did that too... there isnt enough draw to make them cancel after the led upgrade.

also the cancelling solenoid is located in with the turn-signal switch, and relies on a signal from the control unit, so it can be easily disabled at that point, or possibly modified to work the way we want it too.

I got tired of the cancel solenoid firing all the time in the switch so I disabled mine and removed the turn sensor and the brown control unit. Now it is just an "ID10T" error when it does not work.
