Painted my CT90's gas tank with Duplicolor Engine Enamel Yellow.
I thought it was gas resistant but the gas seeped out from gas cap vent holes softened the paint around them.
I can cover the tank with 2 part urethane clear coat I used before but I am a bit worried with the gas cap. Clear coat cannot cover the base paint completely at the vent holes so it may be affected.

Is there a thing like urethane color paint which is gas resistant by itself?

A urethane paint should be pretty tough with/without clearcoat. Of course, it will be kinda dull without the clear. You can always mix the clear in with the color, tho, and it will work that way, but may not be as shiny.
Enamels will stand up to fuels pretty well, but they are not impervious to it. Engine enamels hold up fairly well for a while, but they will break down if repeatedly subjected to fuel spills and such. Whatever you use, if you mop up spills quickly, and put some new wax back on the tank, it should survive nicely. Don't know what you can do about venting fumes onto the tank, tho.... :headscratch:

No No No,Do not MIX the clear with the paint. If you have both do it right.Paint first, clear over.Otherwise you are just thinning out the color, requiring to many unneccesary coats, and impossible to get a good color match.

To answer your question,Yes,There is urethane single stage paint. In many brands I am sure. One that I sell is a dupont brand known as NASON fullthane. It can be mixed to almost any color in the dupont library. It is a single stage urethane that is very resistant and durable, yet affordable.

If you do not have paint equipment, check around with your local autoparts stores or paint supliers to see if the have the capabilty to load it into aresol.
Otherwise look for a product call PREVAL. https://www.preval.com It is a small glass refillable jar with a propelant can attached. These work great for small jobs, and do not require a compresor or paint gun.

Otherwise you could just scuff and clear over what you have.I have acually used cheap aresol black with a hi end automotive clear coat on small bits on my bike with excellant results.

Thanks.

Gas cap and the top of the tank are hidden by the seat so I guess I can even get away with paint brush job.

What about this?

VHT ENGINE ENAMEL™
VHT 550°F (288°C) Engine Enamels™ are available in a wide range of colors, including exact match factory colors. All colors have excellent durability and superior heat and chemical resistance. They are specially formulated to withstand corrosion, rust, salt spray, chemicals and additives of today’s gasoline blends and degreasers. VHT 550°F (288°C) Engine Enamels™ are a unique blend of urethane and ceramic resins, which produce a tough and long-lasting finish for engines, engine accessories or wherever a tough durable heat or chemical resistant finish is needed.

Curing Engine Enamel
VHT Engine Enamel only attains its unique properties after correct curing.
•Bake at 200°F (93°C) for 20 minutes.
•The inherent heat of engine operation will also accomplish curing.

It says it's urethane based and requires curing in the oven. Not like Duplicolor.
I can use it for gas cap only and the rest will be sprayed over with 2 part urethane clear.

Yeah....for the cap it'll prolly work fine. Doubt I would be putting the tank in the oven.... :smilie_happy:

How 'bout some pics of this thing? :beg:

I used the Duplicolor engine paint with the Dupilcolor high heat clearcoat almost three years ago and the engine is still shiney! Gas has not harmed the clearcoat yet!

The "before" pic:
40+ year old paint peeling
BTW, I ditched stock 90cc engine and planted brand-new Lifan (chinese) 125cc with manual clutch.
The engine, carb, CDI, coil, manifold and all costed only $220 so I couldn't resist.
So far (500 miles) it's been working fine.

Didn't know there was "high heat" version of clearcoat.
My experience with "engine enamel" clearcoat was not good (yellowed clear) but I guess high heat should work after proper curing.
Not possible for gas tanks though. They may explode in the oven. If not, my wife will surely do if she finds out. :hihihi:

The high heat clearcoat is just resilient to engine heat without yellowing (or peeling). I have just found that it also protects against gas spills. I did shoot the clearcoat while the color coat was tacky and I am real happy with the longevity I have gotten from this coating system!
